talkback just allows you to hear yourself through your own speaker.

It's a mod that really is only needed if you run echo...but on the rear of the radio are 2 jacks...an ext. spkr jack and a PA jack. To get talkback you open up the radio and solder a resistor across the two jacks. The type resistor used will dictate the volume level of the talkback. I don't recall off hand what resistor to use. Of course if you really wanted to get creative, you could do something such as install a variable resistor (aka volume switch) in the bottom of the radio and then solder to the two jacks. Some CB shops make use of the RF gain knob on the front of the radio for a talkback volume knob.

Has anyone tried a Uniden speaker?

I have a knob on the back of my CB to control the volume of my talkback!

I have had it before and had it installed before and it was on a knob on my 29 don't remember which. I didn't know how it was done but costed 20.00 10 yrs ago. I didn'n know there was talkback speakers. That kind of neat. Is the talkback volume adjustable when you buy one one these talkback speakers? If I am understingingit right they just hook into your back plugs for ext speaker and PA. If you get one of these talkbacl speakers does your radio recieve come through it or just your talkback alone?

Here's a pretty good write-up on the talkback mod, both the standard one and also adding a variable one. From cbmagazine.com.
Lots of mods there. Enough to get a greenhorn in trouble. Lots of reviews, links, etc. A really good site. History, too, from the published CB magazines of yore.

I have the cobra external speaker with the talkback, but I dont use the talkback on the speaker since I have it on my CB. But to answer your question yes you can hear yourself as well as everyone else on the speaker. You just plug it into both of the jacks on the back of your CB. I just have the EXT Spker jack pluged in. And yes theres a volume as well as a power button on the speaker to adjusts it or shut it off (the talk back)

I've always used a Midland ext speaker and never had any issues w/ quality. I'm on my second Midland now, only replaced the other bcoz it was 10 years old and dried out/brittle.

Yeah it's adjustable on most of the talkback speakers. Yes you get normal audio. The talkback "bleeds" into the audio when you key down. You don't get receive audio when the key is down (transmitting) - you get talkback.
The good talkback speakers have talkback volume, receive volume and tone. As Turbo-T said, use talkback to set a power mike, dynamike or a mike with echo.
