A friend sent me pics of a Daimler test mule that appeared to be a Freightliner with a Star logo on the grill.

I asked my salesman and he said yes....they are going to using the aluminum Freightliner 122SD cab and sleepers. But he said Star will add extra bracing and some of their own touches.

What I read of this: More profits for Daimler by using the same cab for everything. And the end of the one good point about Western Star.....the simple basic wiring. I can see all the modules and multi-plexing coming that FL uses.

I'm glad I have what I have. All the trucks that came in after mine are giving issues. Seems like lots of electrical issues, although it's minor stuff.

At 225k this one has been pretty good, aside from the pesky water leak that it took them a year to find.

I guess if there's any good to this news it's the aluminum cab, should be lighter.

I thought WS has been using multiplex wiring for the last five years or so anyway?

IMO Western Star was done the day Daimler bought them. They're just glorified Freightliners. Back in the day they were THE toughest truck you could buy. Way better than anything else if you went off the pavement with it.

Don't get me wrong. We had a Coronado 122SD and it was a nice truck. But if I wanted a Freightliner, I'd buy a Freightliner.
My salesman said they want to go to aluminum cab to get the weight down. I don't know why they can't just cast the current cab in aluminum. The current Star has the nicest dash in the industry. You can fit all the gauges you can every dream of in it. My favorite interior of all trucks today.

Not horrible. The right colour and some external air cleaners would make it look awesome.

    And no split windshield.

Why not just build a stronger 122SD? And call it, I don't know, how about a... 122SD. Because, in reality, that's what it would be.

Remember when GM took the Chevy Cavalier (J Platform) and slapped some Cadillac stuff on it to create the Cadillac Cimarron? That car is considered by everyone in the industry to be the lowest point in Cadillac's history.
And it was not well received by consumers. GM learned it's lesson.

Let's hope Daimler isn't making the same mistake.

Cadillac is just an excuse for GM to tack an additional $15k onto a Chevy for adding an uglier grill and Cadillac badges to it lol.
