I have been driving a long time, but driving a truck for a very short time, and I figured it out already. THe warning is, you ready? Lights change!
Here is a scenario for ya!
Pulling 80K in a 45mph zone, the light gives the left turn arrows in both directions. They get the yellow arrows and then we get the green for straight traffic.
In the middle of the green one direction will get a yellow / red sequence while oncoming still has a green. It then gives the oncoming a green arrow!!!! It finishes the green and yellow arrows and then returns to a green for my direction.
It has happened to me several times in both directions. I can't imagine who came up with that programming idea.
THe point is, just always expect it to change to red. And expect it even more when traction is reduced.
I am more concerned about mortal consequence of running a red light compared to just getting a ticket.

Also the lights around here change in what seems like milliseconds in the hours of midnight to about 5 am. A car hits the sensor on the side street and I get a yellow immediately.

A lot of intersections n Wash DC have number countdowns for people walking in the cross walk, but sometimes they don't know how to count.I have seen them go 8,7,6,5,4.red lite. They seem to forget the 3,2,1 sequence. Some at red lite cameras some don't have them. Those red lite and speeding tickets in the capitol can be pretty expensive.

Every light I approach, I pick my "committed" spot (Smith System!). That's my point of no return for continuing through a stale green light if it turns yellow (provided I can do it safely, of course [ie. no one else in intersection]). I am pretty accurate on how close I can be and stop properly, depending on various speeds AND road conditions.
There have been countless times where I have committed to going through an intersection, and then had the light change to yellow/red very quickly. Quicker than other similar-speed intersections, even in the same city on the same stretch of road.
It is not always about "driving too fast". I've been caught in a quick-change light while doing 5-10mph UNDER the limit on more than 1 occasion.
It happens. If you are driving like a d-bag, accept the fine, and then stop driving like a d-bag. If you legitimately couldn't stop in time, and were driving in an aware/safe capacity, so be it. Argue that point and go about your business.Mototom Thanks this. -
You slow down to be safe and it bites you where you sit!
