Dealing with dead meat isn't always pleasant. Mostly frozen and no big deal. But I have delivered into some nasty ### hell holes over the years. The worst was a pet food plant in MS. I took in a load of combos of chicken bits. The place smelled so bad, I genuinely didn't think anybody could work there. After they off loaded their nasty ### crap, they gave me a free washout which was nice but I had to go get another wash with deodorant. Man that place was nasty.

You could smell the Valley Proteins place in Curtis Bay for miles depending on the wind direction, especially in the summer.

The worst one I was at Thorn Apple Valley's processing house, where pigs came in one side, and the remains of the slaughtering process were at the other end. These were the guts and other parts loaded up on a refuse-hauling trailer, always overflowing, never covered, and often had things falling off. These were hauled off to the landfill. One day I ended up behind one of these trucks, with bloated stomachs bouncing and blood dripping from the gates, the smell was unbearable, and I thought it was the worst smell I ever had to deal with but I was wrong.
I was a temp driver and delivered a die set for a customer to a place that was across the freeway from the same landfill where the pig remains used to go years ago. One morning, I had to deliver there early in the morning, it was a morning where there was a wave of strong stench going across the freeway right into the area where I was parked to unload. I opened the door of the truck and almost puked, it was so bad that I had to close the door, turn off the heat, and hope that the smell didn't penetrate the seals of the truck door. I called my customer and told the manager there was no way I could deliver the load until the smell was gone, he broke out laughing. He told me the first time that happened to him, he puked in the truck cab and kept puking for 10 minutes.Last edited: Sep 26, 2024

I can confirm that a dog food load of rancid meat was the smelliest I’ve ever hauled.
Had me wondering about standards for what we feed our pets, because the pallets of meat were labeled “Not for human consumption,” and the customer didn’t require temperature control(DRY load.)tscottme, FearTheCorn and bzinger Thank this.
