Your van freight is probably nothing that would ever go on my truck. I get substantially better rates with my van but it doesn't move as much as the reefer does. I only book my van when someone has a real need either the broker is desperate and losing or the customer's deep pockets benefit me.
So you must live in a busy area since you have luxury of waiting when someone is desperate I can't imagine you dead head
There is no luxury out here running a truck on the spot market. At times my area is busy, sometimes not, and yes I do deadhead a lot. 500 or 600 miles is not unusual though its normally around 200 miles on any given load. I cut it when I can and don't care for it but it's the nature of how I operate so I deal with it.
My story, usually every Monday, and Wednesday I got to WhiteWave Mt. Crawford, VA, at 11 00am, and depart at 18 00 or 19 00
I can tell you how my last 2 weeks went. Drag furniture from middle of Virginia on Wednesday to drop Monday, 11k pounds, half to Reno and the other half to Hayward. Dispatch to wait in Salinas to find something paying coming back towards east TN. Grab a 34, reload in Fresno on Wednesday going to Clackamas Oregon for Fri morning. Unload Fri morning after 4 hrs of waiting an head to prosser WA to reload, sit for about 10-12 hrs getting loaded and sack out at the shipper. Unload in rialto Monday morning and start picking up one in cantua Creek, 2 in Salinas. Get Cantua on and one Salinas on that night due to the other closing by 10pm local time. Tuesday morning they dropped my 2nd Salinas pick but still have to load in Lamont. Sit in Lamont for 22.5 hrs finally leaving Wednesday evening and they still expect product in hickory N.C. and abingdon VA Friday morning for a solo driver, no go. Kick it all off Saturday morning and head home. Between a 34 and all loading and unloading I probably lost 90 or 100 hrs sitting in docks or sitting at shipper/receivers. The least I spent at any location being right at 3 hrs.
