Or maybe it's because changing jobs typically means a lapse in income (how many weeks did your employer hold back your first check?) therefore a lot of people with little to no savings depend upon a signing bonus to tide them over - particularly if someone in their family needs COBRA until the healthcare insurance at the new company kicks in.

In your haste to ____ on CEOs you forgot about the little man.

I wonder if some of you know the difference between a sign on/ hiring bonus and a referral bonus. Looking at most of these posts, I would say no.

My company offers a referral and sign on bonus but still has a difficult time attracting quality/qualified drivers.
A couple years ago a senior guy got his buddy on w the intention of splitting the referral bonus but as soon as he started decided to stiff the guy. He was a bar room buddy and never made it thru the probation period and don't know if he ever even collected.
I personally was checking out a new employer recently and they offered a 5 grand sign on bonus and were prepared to cover a 7 grand COBRA coverage cost. They also had a 5K referral bonus but found the job thru their website, which I ultimately turned down.

Good drivers w a excellent record and/or history are hard to come by and legit companies can and will pay...up to 20K,... up front for them.

It more depends on the quality of the person you attract, than the quantity. I can find you 20 drivers if you'll pay me $1,500 ea., I can't vouch for their quality, but they'll fog a mirror.

I'm bringing this back up because I don't recall seeing you mention that $20K sign-on bonus. What protects the company from that driver taking the 20 and then walking out the door?

Not mine but others. Do not know if the offers of big sign on bonuses are legit or not.
I was offered 12K in medical and $$ but never made the jump.
From what I understand the bonuses are paid quarterly and increase till the last one.
Airgas here in St Paul currently has a 8K and a 5K bonus for different positions at their new plant. I've submitted a online app Monday so we will see if they call.
If I can improve on my lot in life I won't hesitate.
BTW we have a 2K referral bonus but don't think anyone would be that cruel to bring a friend on here...lol
