my first driving job was with a reefer company - back when the reefers were not yet satellite controlled/monitored and used old rheostats/potentiometers for controls...

it was easy for me then - and should be easier for you today...

you get used to the noise and typically you will make a bit more pulling a ice box.

Speaking of filling up the reefer tank, how fast does a reefer go through 50 gallons? (on average, since I figure colder loads use more fuel) I'm getting ready to start running reefer with my wife and wanted to get an idea of costs.

Totally depends on the outside ambient temp... Outside same temp or colder than your programmed temp and the reefer unit shouldnt come on... for example.

really depends on reefer unit - load volume - ambient temp - required load temp and type of trailer and reefer. day / night and if the unit is in transit.

a unit in transit will cool better because of moving airflow over roof and underbelly...

example ::: a zero F. meat load packed to the ceiling in 80 F. sunny heat in a 53' Utility spc model 4 with a thermo king TKIV or later will burn a 50 gallon tank in a day and a half set on cycle sentry. on continious it will last 20-27 hours.

by contrast a single pallet of popsicles on that same day will use more fuel due to the wasted air space that will "heat up" a LOT quicker to denser freight "holding temp".

a 40 F. produce load on that same day may get up to 3.5 days on same amount of fuel.

yeah I have nothing but good memories of reefers...

made a killer living with them - and as an o/o I enjoyed working with my customers and clients....

(signed a sweet deal with dole that lasted until I sold everything and joined the teamsters)

reefers offer some good versatility too when you need to get out of a location that has nothing "cold" for you - you can haul most dry box loads as long as they are 45K or under... (reefers weigh more empty due to 1900 lb motor and fuel tank and 2300 lbs + in insulation.
