I've been off the road around 7 years now. I still have my CDL with all the endorsements and medical card. Once before when I left trucking for about 4 years I remember the company saying "It's good that you came back before 5 years or you would have had to go to a full term trucking school all over again."

Are the specific requirement to refresh, retrain, start from scratch or whatever determined by insurance companies or just company policy? I have no problem going out with a trainer or taking refresher courses or whatever is necessary. I know hours of service have changed as well as other things. I just want to be mentally prepared if I have to pay thousands to attend trucking school again.

I hope this doesn't sound too psycho, but my preference is to either (1) work for Danny Herman (explained in another thread about looking for low pay, high miles per load, and rare contact with dispatch
.... or (2) work LTL exhaustion delivery so I can maintain physical fitness. But I don't want to approach companies yet until I have everything ready to go (all belongings liquidated) and my fitness level high (in about 3 weeks).

I work for FedEx Freight and Im pretty sure you would have to go threw the dock to driver program. Most companies I see want experience in the last 2-3 years.

But all you can do is call companies and ask.

Are you still in San Jose?
Several companies will hire you as long as you pass the DOT physical and drug test.

Knight Transportation has a quickie refresher and can then put you with Kold Trans which is owned by Knight. Kold Trans runs as far south as Miami. Has a couple of terminals in California.

Abilene Motor Express hires drivers in your situation.
Has 2 drop yards in California.
@JohnBoy is a trainer there for new drivers. Unable to get on the website; think it's been hijacked.

That's where I went after a 16yr gap in trucking. 5 weeks on trainer's trucks then they turned me loose. Did 2.5 years there and made good money considering I was a "newbie"

Swift wouldn't be a bad choice to get back in the game. Paid orientation and paid while with a trainer for a couple of weeks. Others may disagree, but............a good way to go in my opinion.
