Ok. So I have an 08 VNL780, D16 iShift with 866,000 miles on it. Its used to pull a Toy hauler and is only used once a month.. sometimes more, sometimes less. It seems as if every 3-5 trips it wants to regen. Is that due to the DPF filter needing to be cleaned/replaced? Or is it based on time/miles? After this last regen, the light for high EGT's stayed on even though the gauge was reading <400*. I let the truck idle once I got home to finish the regen and for the EGT's to drop... Even after it idled for 20 minutes, the EGT light stayed lit. Against better judgement, I had to shut it down as I had to leave...
Thanks

Idle time will make more frequent regens as all the cold smoke plugs things up.
Straight cetane booster in your fuel would be your friend... Reduces particule emissions.. -
Might want to check out OTR performance website too ... Good volvo stuff

well first thing i would suggest is to find out a way to make sure if it is doing a proper regen or if it is attemting to do a regen. when you say 3 to 5 trips what kind of miles are you talking about and what kind of idle time as it will effect the regen requests. normal operation should be every 1000 miles or so it should do a regen but not ask to do aparked regen if asking for one then there is a problem.

Mine avarages between 1800 and 2600miles,depending on how I drive, and sometimes ask for parked regen when is very cold and I idle truck couple nights in a row, he needs to shed more information, maybe he stops and park a truck e
Before driving regen is completed? -
Sorry for the late response.. I had posted a reply but for what ever reason it never saved.
First off the truck really does not idle all that much. And its actually been a while that I've run any Cetane boost in the fuel.
Our average trips on the truck are 250-500 miles round trip only pulling roughly 22,000#lbs. And maybe one or two trips a year that will range from 700-1200 miles round trip. All regens have happened while traveling and I've never gotten an error message that the regen has failed. And its never requested a parked regen. The last two actually started while close to home and was still in the process of the regen while parking. So I would let the truck idle after its parked to complete the process. Maybe its too many short trips thats causing it to load up?
My plans are to bypass the DPF at some point.
Thanks for the responses... -
3 trips (250 miles each) is 750 miles that would be the low end for a regen, 5 trips of the same 250 miles would be 1,250 miles and yes it should need a regem by then, 3 trips of 500 miles each is 1,500 miles it should regen, 5 trips of 500 miles is 2,500 miles and it should do 2 or 3 regens
sounds like it's working just fine....
btw when you park (pull the yellow knob} this will stop a driving regem... so if you idle for 20 min's after you stopped it did nothing but idle, if you stop and wanted to finish the regen you would need to do a parked regen or when you park if it's doing a regen you must only pull the red knob until it's done then pull the yellow
we had a NEW 2008 with a d13 running team 1,300 plus miles a day with zero idle time and it would do a regem every day
also bypassing the dpf on a Volvo isn't EZ, you can't just bypass it like you would a catalytic converter on a car, you will need to bypass the dpf, cap off the fuel line going to the dpf and change the ECM from a 2005-2007 d16Last edited: Feb 22, 2017

Thanks Flood. This truck only pulls a 5th wheel toy hauler so I do not need the yellow knob/Trailer brakes. And when I have parked, the regen continues until it finishes. It seemed a bit of overkill so I was assuming that there was an issue. When I purchased the truck two years ago, they stated that the filter would need to be replaced at some point as its been cleaned to many times. Thus why I plan to bypass it.
As for bypassing the DPF.. There are a few companies out there that can reprogram the ecm, which is the route I hope to take. They suggest drilling holes through it once its been programmed.
