I'm not sure this belongs in this section, so please move if I posted it in the wrong area.
Now that I have a 1999 W900 purchase pending, suddenly Progressive is giving me #### about what they already quoted me.
I am going to use this truck as 'show/hobby/personal' and was OK with the quote price of $1066. Now they want $2750 as they tell me that I need primary liability and such (and $400 for a trailer I dont even own or will ever use).
I may end up loosing my $500 deposit in this deal if I cant get affordable insurance. So I was wondering..since some of you had suggested registering it as an RV...
Is that even really legal or possible and if so HOW?
What do you need..(proof/forms/etc)?
My current insurance company wont insure a tractor as an RV unless it has an RV attached (think long box truck) - so I am not sure if this would even help me.
Anyone??
I am buying the truck with cash. Free and clean and no liens/loans.
I tried Gulfway insurance and they totally blew me off.

"Gulfway Insurers started its Collector Truck program in 2001 after speaking with the management at American Truck Historical Society and being told an innovative insurance program was needed for the truck collector. The highlights of this program include no mileage limitation, no radius limitation, we can include trailers, there is no size or weight limitation, inside storage is not required."

I think it has some thing to do with the state certifying its an RV. Tough to get done from what I've heard. They do not like to change the original certification from the manufacturer.
Also the 5th wheel, air lines and electrical pig tail have to go. -
Thanks for the quick reply.

Since I am not using a trailer, the pig tail and air lines are easy to remove but the truck would look very odd w/o a 5th wheel
..
Maybe I can look at someone else that offers collector insurance. I dont know. I am beyond upset about this and so disappointed...not sure where to turn next..so I am looking at different ideas. -
I'm sure it depends on the state but a guy from NM that told me about his struggle to get his truck with oversized sleeper registered as an RV in NM said that the first thing the state demanded go in his quest was the 5th wheel.
Long as that and any mounting hardware was any where near the truck it would NEVER be registered as an RV in NM. -
It can be done. You must abandon the DOT certification and meet state requirements. Texas is the easiest to do it in.
Once any state has accepted it as an RV, you can move the registration anywhere.

I was JUST able to work things out so I dont need to explore this mess. I understand what is needed but what a hassle. Actually everything is a hassle lately-

Thank the gooberment!
To error is human, to FUBAR requires the gooberment.outerspacehillbilly and misterG Thank this. -
Put one of the light duty 5th wheels on there like you see in the back of pickups trucks...enough to pull a travel trailer, but no more.
...and a '99 model truck is hardly a "collector" truck. Ain't old enough to be special enough to be worth anything to anyone yet...which is probably why they didn't take you seriously. Go at least 10-20 years older, and they won't look at you all
when you try insuring it as a collectible.
Hanadarko Thanks this.
