I ran under my own authority 11 or 12 years ago, I was good at it, meaning I could sell my services very well for top dollar, it was the "back office" stuff that I wasn't wanting to handle at the time and put my numbers into hybernation, been leased to a carrier ever since. I have thought about reinstating it over the last couple of years, I feel I am ready to handle the "back office" stuff now(with some help from my wife). But the biggest thing is, I feel I am leaving way to much money on the table by not really having any negotiating power. Sure I will get called on by an agent once in a blue moon that has a customer that really needs to get something moved, and I almost always get my price. But 99% of the time its here is the load, this is what it pays, take it or leave it. I know alot of this stuff I move has the potential to bring a higher rate, but the majority of agents at Mercer are afraid to go to the customer and get it, or don't have the skills to successfully do so. Most of them would rather give the load back to the customer.

That's the good thing about the open market. You will see brokers who are timid in the same sort of way. Sometimes they will just up and tell you that's too high and you're crazy. Sometimes they will pretend they're going to the customer to ask, but don't. Sometimes they won't even take your calls anymore and get mad about it or you never hear from them again, until they REALLY need a truck. And the good ones will go to the customer and at least offer the option, but brokers like that are few and far between. Some of those are the ones who don't choke over fair rate quotes, I say fair, most brokers consider them ridiculously high compared to the averages - but with the sorry state of affairs and lots of folks in logistics who don't have a clue about operating a truck..... But hey, you can always walk at any point if you don't like something. Once you partner up with the right brokers and carriers, or maybe even direct, you really shouldn't have any trouble at all staying real busy in the ups, fairly busy in the not so up times, and at least have the option to park based on bank $$$ in the downs. I would hate not being able to get more money on loads when I knew there was always that possibility, and not even to have the option to shop anywhere else, that would really suck... I think the worst part about independent is invoicing, staying on top of it and keeping the cash flowing.. Staying on top of old invoices, etc. You can always use a factor or only use brokers with low price quick pay options or at the very least less than 30 days pay...

Yeah but he'll be hauling the scraps of Mercer, maybe, unless he has a few good contacts who trust him now at Mercer. I would think your wife doing the invoicing and tackling other paperwork tasks would make this much more fun, of course wifey will have her price for that I'm sure lol.

Most everything that is on the Mercer outside carrier load board is trash, but I do have some agents that I am in good with that I could get the good stuff out of. My wife is a very detail oriented person, and would do very well at the day to day office stuff. Hmmm, I wonder what her price would be?
