The test for air brakes is written. Unless that has changed, getting that lifted will involve passing the test paying for whatever the reissued license costs.
-
I don't think it is that simple. The comment said they tested in a vehicle without air brakes. Even if you had took and passed the air brake test I am not sure you can test in a non air brake vehicle and just get a clear CDL without that restriction. I'm not saying you are wrong for a fact, I'm saying I think you are. I will research this later.25(2)+2 Thanks this.

If it has changed, let us all know, I possibly and several people I knew tested without air brakes, I'm not sure about mine, but people I knew took the class a driving with pickups and 5th wheel trailers and later drove semi. It was 2004, one snowy day in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. Very cold.
MN had a more restrictive way, but I never got into that because I passed with no restrictions. Border areas get more complicated. -
Ok I'm pulled in, going out on a limb here. The air brake is a written test, correct?, but when you take your driving test you must do a pre trip and air brakes is part of it if the truck you test in has it. So I would have to say you might have to take the whole driving test over in a truck with air brakes, I could be wrong.

It could be that it's changed, just like there didn't used to be a non manual restriction, and this one may vary by state.
-
I got in the automatic truck and drove it. If I get a job with a manual later I'll worry about it then. I can shift I would just be rusty. It's not brain science it's just pushing a pedal and moving a stick.
-
What is this?
Shifting a manual in a big truck involves alot more than just moving a gearshift. If you wished to insult me and 5 million other truckers with this "Simply moving the stick" congratulations. You did.
It is not long ago when the States made a rule to slap a restriction on any CDL tested wtihout a Manual truck. I consider it very stupid and short sighted. I have driven a auto, one that was very well tuned to that detriot I loved alot. Thank goodness it has a manual mode so I can shift with it if I so chose in the mountains among other things.
You cannot unring a bell. It's done and there will be a constant flow of people getting that restriction put on. Then they come here after they found out that they cannot hire onto a company with no automatics.TravR1 Thanks this. -
insulted because you can double clutch it?
-
Back in the stone age I saw many fights start with the words --- Why you double clutching ------! I never understood why that was considered an insult!
Aamcotrans Thanks this.
