Thermostats allow the water pump to pressurize the cooling system in the block above the radiator cap preasure about 25 lbs, that is what makes the flow of coolant as positive as posible especially towards the valve area.
Most trucks run a full blocking thermostat and as the tempature goes 10 to 15 degrees above opening tempature it puts the flow fully towards the radiator. Without the thermostats or properly functioning seals the flow will take the path of least resistance and go down the bypass tube.
An engineer makes the cooling system to operate with a functioning rad cap, a thermostat, the best coolant as clean as posible, water filter recommended, a radiator clean inside and out.
Not one manufacturer advises the use of any aditive not related to the antifreeze, that should be run at -40 F.
I worked on engines all my life and recommend Dex-cool, power-cool products, Never add DCA4 that is real crap and is a coating look it up no-wear does it say a protectant. On the older Cummins, N14 and older, it was common to replace the bypass tube due to internal rusting, and that was on systems that were properly tested and maintained.
I saw so many customer destroy a perfectly good engine because the used water because some idiot told them it was a good idea or removed the thermostats modified them.
I will get off my soap box now!
