You really should drive for someone before you throw your money away.. Please take my word on this. I wish I had the 80,OOO the bank gave me a few years ago when I was gun ho about buying a dump truck.. I would buy scratch off tickets with it.. Brokers are not your friends they are there to make money off of you.. People that lease you on see you as free money and could are less about you.. You need a STRONG network to make it happen as an independent o/o these days even then I see one of my friends sitting all of last week and his phone is full of contacts.. So much for showing off his 125k pete and 50k ravens those chiken lights are awfully dim latley...
You should not put a dime into a truck we are in a recession..

I can see that cut and dry, that's exactly what being an owner operator is. It's a businessman that can get away with wearing jeans and knows how much his trailer will off track when his fifth wheel is slid out furthest. I love this and I'm glad I did it. I haven't been on a sales call where I actually have physical results I can deliver, in years!!

Boxcar, are you working for a broker or do you have your own customers or both?

I was leased on to a company.. Never had my own customers... But dealt with brokers crazy low rates and the owner of the company that I was leased to that ran himself out of business buying chrome.. for his trucks

Yeah no doubt.. his drivers were so spoiled.. they wouldn't even drive around without the same brand tires on all the axles.. And if you didn't have a split tank for hydraulic oil you were lame.. I had a square one behind my cab I felt like the biggest loser.. Wow when i think back he blew alot of money just looking good

nothing wrong with looking good if you can afford it and are willig to make the sacrafice. I admitt I will skip some things to look good but it sure isn't going to run me to the poor house

I guess there's an era in time for looking good and then there's times to be a little cautious with your dimes:)

I'm also willing to pay that extra for something that looks nice and has an image. Up here, Volvos are actually pretty popular (I guess European is seen as high quality), but nothing will out do the endless classic look of a W900 or a 379, and for the prices they're selling at right now, I see myself doing that. Just tell me which truck accessory stores to avoid East of the Mississippi, and I'll be safe from the chrome.
