    Hello
Anyone have experience replacing frame rails on a big truck? I have a couple pre-emission Volvo VNs that the frames are going down fast. I talked to a shop in Vermont that specializes in producing the rails, predrilled, the biggest holdup is the wait time of several weeks between shipping them the old rail and getting back the new pair. Any help with suppliers near Eastern Pa would be appreciated

How much did they quote? You can probably get some wrecked newer Volvo's with good frames on auction and swap everything over

In the old days busted frame rails are fatal to any vehicle.

Today if you have a shop that can support correct frame rails for the application (Your tractor) and spend some weeks making sure the new rails bolt on correctly etc you can enjoy many more years out of that frame. (A idea would be to send old rails to scrap value. A junker would pay you cash money)

I recently had a vehicle totaled and they told me I would have it completely taken apart and the new frame put in. I told them no forget it and it sold to salvage after I got paid more than what I had in it. Thinking back after I spent sometime learning about frames today it was a mistake. But thats water under the bridge.

Go for it, but you need to be like standing over their shoulder in that frame shop and be a participant learning in what's involved in new frame. Anything is possible as far as I am concerned, even frames.

So, with just an initial phone call to them, the secretary ther would only give a rough estimate of between 5 -10 thousand for the pair, predrilled with shipping included both ways. Kind of pricey, but sure would simplify things if pre drilled

If your truck is a good one, then I guess it's really good.

In steel if they predrill the frame when they built it and take the stresses out of it and all that then its going to be a good frame. Just need to bolt everything.

I cannot deal with 15000 dollar bill in my current thinking but if it buys years and keeps you from having to commit to 150,000 for a replacment tractor then alls well I say. The shop is really need to do a good job. Its not that complicated if they really know what they are doing. I like the idea of predrilled alot.

I could see that if they outsourced the swap instead of doing the labor in house

Unless you have a mag drill. That is well worth it and a good price.
