ALL large truck operations have missing trailers at any given time. Especially operations with 10-20-30 thousand trailers. Trailers on the highway, trailers spotted at shippers, trailers in repair shops, trailers here/there everywhere. I've always wondered how shipping containers are accounted for, what with all the places they go, worldwide. FFE, when I worked there years ago always had at least 10 trailers unaccounted for in their system and had "bounties" if you found one. I always inventoried trailers sitting at a shipper and notified dispatch. A couple times they asked me to verify, because, in the system, it showed a certain trailer 1500 miles away, which was sitting at a shipper.

One time I called my old dispatcher and asked "hey, is trl#XXX missing?" Nope, it's in your town assigned to a guy who's on his time off.... okay cool. DRAT, no bounty for me. :D

On time I went to a drop yard to look for an empty, and was asked to inventory, as the company was no longer using that yard. I LOOOOVED looking for empties when coming back from time off. pffft.
