Remember to keep track of all 24hr periods away from home.Since you will be working under DOT rules you will be able to claim 80% of $63 dollars a day per diem (for food) on your taxes which will make your income tax return look sweet. You don’t have to save any meal receipts for this.Keep all your receipts for work related. gear boots, flash lights, cell phone, gps and so on

What kind of trucking do you want to do? If you want to run OTR pulling dry van or reefer, then Chinatown's recommendations are good. On the other hand if you want to pull flatbed, tankers, dry bulk, or any number of interesting options, then you are in the middle of oil field work up to your eyeballs. Depending on the outfit you choose you could be home every day or sometimes out for a week at the most.

Look around where you live and you will see "Hiring CDL drivers" signs in most company yards and billboards on highways advertising for drivers. I would wager that there's probably at least a dozen companies looking for drivers within a thirty mile radius of where you live.

What town do you call home?

Unfortunately, the recent tax law changes have eliminated itemized deductions for company drivers. This statement is no longer accurate. There are several threads on the forum that discuss this topic.

But filing your 2017 taxes would still include those deductions. Correct?

I'd be willing to bet that one stipulation would be if any hours to work become available on a recap then the pay is gone since it's then a "choice".

Lots of times my first hours gained back on a recap are in the 5.5 range because I leave on a Sat evening.

5.5 is useless to me. That would really burn me if they wanted me to roll on it and not wait jyst a few more hours for a new 70.

    We'd butt heads

I get $50 for doing a reset away from home. Easy to get. If reset away from home you get it. No other conditions. I am away typically 25 days at a time and usually get one reset every time during that time. Always been paid no questions asked. I work for Britton Transport out of Grand Forks, ND.

McElroy out of Cuba, AL guarantees you home on Saturday and pays you if you don't make it I believe. I never worked for them, but they tried to recruit me when I first started and that was one of their selling points

Yes. Assuming you will itemize deductions.
