GEEZUZ! So, I guess what your really saying is... stay calm, accept all the middle fingers and horns honking and just get it done huh? Crying and complaining won't help. Just learn and write that down in your little book? All of a sudden "chompi's" idea doesn't seem so corny anymore? At least not to me.

yeah lol.....even with all the technology avaiable to us now.....and i use it all if i'm going in somewhere i've never been before, that little notebook is worth it's weight in gold.....mine is organized by customer and then by city and i always check it if it's somewhere i don't remember being.....although if i don't remember it, it usually isn't a problem.....the ones that are problems you usually remember lol.....that particular one was also at 5pm. in philly. bad enough on a good day with no problems.
traffic, fingers and horns are the least of your problems if you get in a situation like that. ignore them. and stay calm. the best thing you can have is patience and the ability to stay calm and think on the fly. if you get flustered then that's when the REAL problems start.
i can look back at that one and laugh now but it sure wasn't funny at the time. and happened on maybe my 3rd week solo. what an education that was lol -

about 45 minutes given the sheer number of cars and pace of traffic that time of day.... maybe 5 miles total from missed turn to getting back to the light where i should have turned. had to sit thru 4 light changes waiting to make the final right towards the shipper until someone with something between their ears held back at the light to give me room to get the turn. wasn't moving to the right around that light pole until someone did. longest 5 miles of my driving career so far.

Sometimes restrictions are in place, but for some reason they don't post a physical sign. If you use the MCRA from Rand I know they try to verify any restriction and keep the MCRA as correct as possible.

Even though some restrictions are in place such as restrictions for a 53' 102" trailer (STAA) and the road is non-STAA (48', 96") you can make a local delivery. You just cannot use it as a through route.

The posts here are all correct as far as I can see about how ambiguous the rules/enforcement can be. Yep, most of the times the signs for "No Trucks" will be AFTER you have made your turn.
"Why yes, officer, I was trying to back into a 6-lane intersection to get myself off this road that you were going to ticket me for being on anyway. As a matter of fact, my wife tells me I am some kind of an idiot quite often! No sir, I'm not trying to be some kind of a smart-axx. Did you just ask me if I WANT a ticket?"
Do lots of job-site deliveries, many residential on roads/streets that are - you guessed it - signed as restricted. Been ticketed twice in Atlanta and suburbs enroute to a delivery and had to appear in court both times; no paying your fine ahead of time, required to go. Sorta like being double fined as you are missing-out on work just to be there then have to pay the ticket fine!! Glad I didn't have to travel hundreds of miles to get there for court!
Now, if your delivery in ON that road that is restricted, that is OK so they will say.
I won't even try to comment on the weight-restricted bridges that you may encounter with the sign within a mile or so or even worse right at the edge of the bridge. Makes your sphincter draw-up when you see single-digits numbers on the sign!
"Why yes m'am, I was trying to turn this rig around in your driveway. Yes m'am, I actually thought I could make it. I'm sorry about your mailbox, and the shrubbery, and the cracks in your driveway, and the 5-inch deep ruts in your sod, and the broken sprinkler line, and your child's antique tricycle. As a matter of fact, my wife tells me I am some kind of idiot quite often!" -

The STAA routes in the motor carrier atlas aren't always correct, and the signage isn't always there, either. It isn't always about the route being a hazard, either. Places that are problematic and get lots of traffic deal with this effectively by giving directions, infrequent locations like job sites or new businesses can be a gamble.
Signs go up sometimes because someone doesn't like the trucks there and makes a big deal about it. Lately, I have noticed a place we go is restricted by signage from Lemont RD south of I-55 near or in Woodridge, IL. I drove in, but then looked at other ways out, because eventually, some local will write you a ticket for being on those streets even though there are businesses along those same streets with docks and semis parked in them.
We have a working route to use to go south to I-80 using US61 south of Dubuque,IA but avoiding Dubuque itself, it uses a county road from US 20 to US 151 and another county road across from 151 to 61, to avoid a steep grade on both of those roads, trouble was, somoene living along that road got it restricted and later on, someone else got the restriction lifted, because many of those trucks decided to go through Dubuque. Many companies are using this route, even though the atlas says such routing isn't allowed in Iowa.
Those of you picking on Chicago need to try Pittsburgh, we deliver to a place right next to the police station in McKee's Rocks, and the first time, the cop questioned my directions after telling me if I followed them I would get a ticket, but the way he found for me to go in had me coming off streets the other way through signs marked for no trucks. We deliver there almost weekly and often get queried by the cops unless they remember us.
I have several copies of the PA truck route map, and that doesn't get that detailed for local deliveries, it just has routes restricted and why they are restricted, and you had better not be on those routes marked restricted on that map. Rand McNally actually does pretty well in PA other than not having enough detail.cmc308 Thanks this.
