Retesting and Retraining

I've had mine since the came out with the CDL in 92 I think. I was grandfathered in by the co-op I worked at. I keep my medical card up and rewrite my hazmat test along with getting fingerprinted every 4 years. It's paid for by me. I have no intention of letting it go even though I haven't driven much in 25 years other than a few weeks in the fall of 2018 hauling fertilizer with a straight truck.

 

Well the good news in all of this, is that I can essentially retest.

The process is similar to obtaining a license for the first time: get a medical exam, med card filed with the state (CT), go to DMV to test for a commercial learners permit (I am told that they may waive this fee and forgive the test, because I already held a CDL-A license), take a refresher course and test out when I am ready.

I may actually do this regardless of my decision to return to long-haul, OTR trucking.

What I hear mostly is the physical (they have an exsisting medical problem and will have to jump through hoops to keep a current medical card) and the cost of the license it's self. If you are not making money with it, why bother.

 

I know its only been 4 years. But if I had to do it over. I would go with a company that paid me to get it. That way the trainer is right there pointing out stuff I had forgotten. You had it once. So just getting it back should be easy
