What is the best way to go about getting a long distance ride-a-long? I've always wanted to drive tractor trailers but had a seizure due to a brain tumor and read this would prevent me from getting a CDL. I still dream of driving but would settle for a ride. My brother drives to UPS and not allowed passengers. What is the best way to approach a driver about getting a ride-a-long?

Insurance companies prohibit this. Also company liability issues.

Find another friend in trucking who's company allows riders.

The person would have to have you signed onto insurance through the company also, it may cost around $10 a month or so. Then they have to have your dl# and SS#, etc, a waiver has to be signed also and a letter of permission for you to be in the truck. It's not one of those today I'm just going to jump in a buddies truck and go type deals.

Good luck, too bad you didn't have a relative who drove for someone else. It is a great way to see the country according to how they run. You could also be a help with the writing down of load info, keeping up with mapping and even helping in fixing a snack or cooking since so many truckers now eat a lot more out of their trucks vs fast food or truckstop food.

dont let the first response dscourage you, lots of companies allow ride along under differing circumstance. go hang out at a truck stop and try making friends, or even on here, and start building a relationship with someone. eventually someone will help you realize this part of your dream, dont give up, i hate for you that health reasons made the driving part impossible but the ride along is still possible.
