I'm curious how much fifth wheel slide you have, I'm looking at specing a new tractor trailer combo and I'm trying to get 20,000 on the steer and 60,000 on the tri with out having to back down the pusher. I'm thinking about taking the king pin almost to the pusher, but to do this I need about 12 1/2' of swing clearance. I'm thinking about a flip box on the neck that I can remove when I don't need it. I'm wondering if you or anyone has a setup similar to this.

I have a 10' neck plus my flip neck for a total of 13'. I run out of swing clearance half way between the forward drive and the pusher. I will post a picture here shortly

When you say 10' neck plus flip you're not talking swing clearance you're talking neck length correct?

Ok, do you think if you could slide up to the center of the cheater or close you could get 20,000 on the steer and still axle 20,000 per axle on the tri?

Sure but I would need at least another foot of neck.

I'm glad I found this site I'm kind of a nerd (for lack of abetter term) about this stuff and its nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of. I did some measurements on my current tractor and figured I need at least 13' 6" of swing clearance to get it up to the steer and still clear my fenders when turning. I figure with a flip I can flip or pull when I don't nee it to reduce the over all length for everyday work.

I run a 53' 3 axle with the neck up, 57' with the neck down. I get permits for Ca when empty without too much hassle, but I dont live there neither.
Another option is a 48' 3 axle with a long flip neck. One of our guys has a XL rated for 90k lbs that is like that. Only has a 24' well though IIRC. Keeps him legal in Ca if he needs to be, although he leaves the neck down 99% of the time.
Never made sense to me, neck down and slid all the way up, is the same overall length as the neck up and slid back in most cases.

I don't have to worry about California just Ohio. Right now I have a 53' with 24'6" clear well with 60" spreads on the rear and a 108" swing clearance, Its not enough neck but i also don't have enough fifth wheel slide to take advantage of a longer neck anyway.
