The reason why the turn over is so high is that in my estimation, roughly 50% of CDL carrying "drivers" out there can barely walk and chew gum at the same time. Sure, there are plenty of professional, dedicated, knowledgeable drivers out there. But for every driver that has his/her head on straight, there's another who shouldn't be trusted to manage to wipe themselves, let alone manage running their own truck profitably. The problem that plagues JCT has more to do with the type of drivers that take on their L/P plan, than the plan itself. Sure, there are plenty of drivers who skulk away from JCT after failing miserably...but what accounts for all those who are running great miles, earning plenty of money, and paying off a truck? Blind luck? Voodoo? Donald Trump's comb-over? No, IMO it's that 50%. Plenty of drivers take on JCT's program, and fail...and I've heard their stories....no miles, no support, no help. What they're really saying is that they didn't make any money sitting on their arse half the month, while spending the rest of the month yakking with the other professionals outside of <insert random truckstop> while chain smoking and consuming 2 gallons of their favorite caffeinated beverage. Me...I prefer to keep my truck door closed, run all the miles I can get, and make at present double what I was making as a company driver.
And yes, I drive for JCT.
Carry on....

I love it when these drivers that know nothing try to put in their two cents. Being a l/p especially at jct is like you going to buy a car and use that car to make money. When the car isn't rolling, you ain't making anything and that payment still comes out. Same with an owner op that just bought a truck and had to make payments. Difference is, if you went and bought a truck and failed, you're stuck with that truck and the payments while you have no Job. At JCT, If you fail you walk away no strings attached unless you owe them money.
like I've said many times, those first years when you're trying to pay off that truck, are the hardest years. Until that truck is paid for, it's not yours! Same with you buying a truck at the Deale. Until you have that title in your hand the truck belongs to the lien holder!
Bigjoel - I agree that you can make more at being a company driver. But you're looking at the net, you're not taking into account that being a l/o or o/o you have fixed and variable costs. Until that truck is paid off, I agree with you that you bring home more money as a company driver sometimes, but afterwards you can double or triple that of a company driver. Also I agree most l/p programs are rip offs where you have a balloon payment after the lease. With jct,5 years and the truck is yours. It's similar to you going to a dealer getting a truck and signing a 5 year note. So I stick with my statement that a l/o is a step up from company and a step closer to become an o/o -

So, we decide what loads we want, we can control the amount of money we put towards the truck payments.......how is that exactly like a company driver???? I'd love to hear you explain that one.Trafficcontrolxl, MachoCyclone, 88 Alpha and 1 other person Thank this. -

These post sure are good reads! Im wondering do they govern there trucks? I know its wise to stay at or under 65 to get great fuel mileage but its nice to get around a slower vehicles. also is it better to do a straight lease and not a lease purchase? Lease purchase sounds like you pay more each month then when its done you might own it but its ready to be traded in.

15-25 people a week at orientation tells a different story of a lot more than a 50% fail rate..... 750-1250 people a year going thru orientation for 850 truck fleet isn't something to be proud of.... That being said It can be done if you dedicate yourself to it... Just like anything else... Manage your money/time wisely n you are almost guaranteed success.....
