Road hypnosis and boredom

Yes. Company trucks are 57, and 62 on cruise.

 

There are alot of things to look at when you have time to notice them. I think the day goes by alot faster when you are not 'working' so much. But, it is better to have a choice.

 

stop. get out and inspect the truck.
call a friend. call your mom/dad
try a different kind of monster
talk to someone on the cb
pull one hair at a time out of your head

 

Trucking is probably not for you. No offense but not everyone is suited for every job.

Most peoples idea of a long trip is nowhere near just the average day for a OTR trucker. If you have a problem now wait till you do it day after day.

Those intentional distractions some suggest only work so well and in the age of in cab cameras are going to get you in trouble.

If you have this stuff going on now.. the same state of mind will happen no matter what you drive unless you change it yourself...

 

roger that Roger That72. Satellite radio was a huge help for staying alert and fighting boredom. Also hands free cell phone conversations, I've spoke to friends (drivers) for hours, most of us used Sprint and it was free Sprint to Sprint calls back then. I think our longest nonstop conversation was 6 hours or so. And back in the day we could have civil conversations on the cb to pass the miles.

 

I build houses for my family. I imagine I hit the super jackpot So money isn't an issue. And then whatever part of the country I'm driving I start building houses. From the basement on up. I've only managed to put roofs on a few projects because I usually have arrived at my destination. At night I listen to coast to coast AM and if I can't get a clear signal I will put in a book on cd. And get taken away to another world. If I get lucky I come across another driver on the CB and we chatter away the miles.

 

If you're "driving", you don't get bored, you get tired.

Wresting conscious control of the attentional spotlight and maintaining "concentration" on "driving" is hard, that's why most people wouldn't do it even if they knew the difference in "motoring" and "driving".

The better driver you are, the more mistakes you commit, because your standard of "mistake" is ~infinitely greater than is typical, and because you're paying attention your "driving' is just a constant series of mistakes.

The typical motorist recognizes but 2 mistakes: 1. Crashing. 2. Getting a ticket. And both of those are always the fault of someone or something else, so essentially nothing is easier than being a great driver.
