As someone else mentioned, if Sturgis is going on, forget it. Won't be an open hotel for a 100 miles.
But the GF and I visited here and Mount Rushmore and are glad we did.
Just check to make sure you can still take the bus to the back and walk up onto the future arm. (Not allowed during rain, thunder storms.)
You really, I mean REALLY, don't understand the scale until you stand in front of the head.

For clarity, that's Crazy Horse, not Rushmore itself.

Old Truckers and teenagers have very different ideas about vacationing. Best part of our last vacation in the Smokies, IMO was taking a detour through the Smokies, in our Jeep, the day 1-40 washed out. Got off by Abe Lincoln Cabins, followed that road till it turned into gravel, then rock. Found a little place called Granny’s General store. Had lunch. My wife and daughter weren’t as impressed as I was with the folks, and situations we ran into that day. One guy had a 30 ft camper, we barely negotiated passing each other. The rocky road ( more like a trail) fell off hundreds of feet, Lol. I had a blast. An adventure I’ll never forget. We eventually made it to Cherokee, to see the same old tourist traps. Rattlesnake exhibit. New Casino. Had a Pam Driver trying to take hwy 25, almost hit the low bridge, he was lost. No way a 53’ is going through the middle of the park. That was fun, helping him back up out of a jam. Family wasn’t so enthused. I’d let the family decide. It will be their memories too. Not everyone enjoys the journey, as much as the destination, as we do. Maybe a quick flight to the Bahamas or an all inclusive cruise to Mexico. Leave the traffic behind.

But if yall wanna do a Corpus trip some weekend before it cools off, let me know. We could use a solid couple of days at the beach.
