Take the Durango and drive to conditions. My 28 year old son drives a 1986 Oldsmobile Delta 88 as his daily driver. Travels all over the place regardless of the weather and has no issues. He just slows down if conditions are poor.
Many folks drive rwd or front wheel drive vehicles year round without incident with all season tires. The main highways are cleared and maintained decently.
If you find you are getting nervous, stop for a coffee, relax and get back at it in a bit.
In Alberta winter tires are not mandatory.
I live near Edmonton in a rural area.

In Ca. (FYI) when sign says chain control in effect, it also says "4 wheel drive with snow tires OK". But, that's probably not in every state. Officially, it's winter until march 21st. And you will be going thru the cold area. I'd go 4X4 even if it gets you out of a minor tiff. With my luck, I'd slide into a sloped snowbank at 10pm and have to wait all night for tow !
