Verizon doesn't have towers everywhere, they horse trade with other carriers. ATT uses a different standard(GSM instead of CDMA) that reaches better where they do have coverage, but they aren't everywhere, either.
The county I lived in before has no Verizon towers at all, they pick up coverage there from US Cellular, and the Verizon coverage in this area is spotty even though they have towers in most other counties. I have other reasons for not caring for Verizon. ATT, at least the prepaid services that use their network, doesn't work well here, either. My phone works with few exceptions and definitely works at the house.
I have more problems with losing service, and I have my phone set to indicate that,in home areas, than I do while 'roaming' on Verizon. I have nationwide unlimited coverage as well and it works pretty well in most areas. Some of those home areas coincide with Verizon and ATT home areas.
The nationwide prepaid unlimited services cost less than contracted plans. US Cellular doesn't offer prepaid nationwide plans or I would have one of them. I don't know if I want to try one from Verizon or T-mobile 9sold in the area by I-Wireless). A sure thing is better than trying something else that isn't, in my experience. -
I am in an Verizon Broadband area, but I cannot get cell service since the tower is an old AllTel tower and has not been converted yet...
So the solution - I had to buy a Network Extender and this plugs into the cable modem. It acts like a mini-tower in the house..
$250...

Get a prepaid plan. Then, don't use your phone.

Doing that now but out on the road would want to get emails and access to the web. Tmobile has been fine for roaming and tower sharing access but don't want to lose service because of roaming. Nationwide with another company appears to be the only option. -
If your going OTR, you have two choices. Verizon or ATT. Anything else won't do what you want it to. It is far cheaper these days, so just be thankful. No $500 bills for one voice phone and one data phone anymore. I prefer Verizon, and have had both. Neither work great inside my house.
KansasWhirl Thanks this. -
I've been with Verizon since 09. Never had problems with roaming other than warning msgs on my phone about extra charges for international roaming. They appear to have fixed that though.
They don't have coverage absolutely everywhere but I have signal in most places. They've been busily expanding too. Nebraska used to have nothing outside a narrow strip along I-80. Now they have coverage nearly statewide.
