Ahh yes, I'll be driving through that pretty red part in Oklahoma. Hope to get through there early tomorrow morning and get ahead of it.

Missouri is all clear, at this point Iowa is reporting all clear for roads, and Wisconsin is reporting roads to be in good condition.

Pretty easy actually. My mirrors block a LOT and I always have to do a double take, especially on the left. Plus, he was leaving an area that probably has lots of distracting lights, yard spotters, beacons, etc. So nothing stood out.

Now with that in mind, because of all the possible distractions, it should have been marked more than normal and the driver should have been made aware of it. Tracks frequently run through warehouse yards and it is easy to get complacent around them as they are often not used or only by very slow yard traffic. So he may not have given them as much consideration as he should have.

I've even seen trains out run the signal. Specifically, right outside the Roehl terminal in Gary. I saw the train coming before the lights started flashing, after I stopped then they came on. If I had not seen the train first and at the slow speed that I was going I would have been in exactly the same position when that train flew by.

Modern trains are also much quieter than they were 40 years ago, so you can't hear them either until it is too late.

I'm not making excuses for the guy, but you asked.

Fair enough, now I'll add the picture of the location. Stop signs on both sides of the tracks with simple instructions, stop, look, listen. But I do appreciate your answer, that was right on the mark.

At Gary terminal. Clutch on the truck is out again -- it was flaky when I left Marshfield on Monday, and I had the shop look at it; they sent me next door to the International dealer (it was under warranty) and they said it should adjust itself with time and to just drive the truck and it would be OK. Something must not be working as designed, because over this past week the free play slowly went down to zero, and now I think it's actually starting to slip. Rather than burn up the clutch and end up on the side of I-80 in Iowa tonight in a snowstorm :) I figured it would be better to get it looked at again. At least Gary is in between the two areas of bad weather (currently).
