^^^ that's really interesting, but remember, that's the rating of the trailer attachment points, not the chain/binder itself. my snap binders are rated at 5400 pounds, and it doesn't matter what they're hooked to or how tough the chain is. 5400 pounds is the weak link in the chain. but it's useful to know where the trailer is strongest at.

you're sadly correct about relaly loads in gary. i've found them with insufficient tiedowns, wrong tiedowns, no edge protectors, straps loose on the deck under the tarp, metal edge protectors fallen out from under the chains, cardboard edge protectors not under the strap, and so on. not to mention relay trailers that had been dropped off and parked broken and uninspected, waiting for me to have to fix them three days later on my own time.

i usually just fix the dumb stuff and go on, but if it's really illegal or unsafe i take pictures and send them in. i do not want somebody dead because a driver couldn't be bothered to do something right.

    Perpetual Thanks this.

like this last year. it's in the new FMSCR book where metal coils are defined, 393.5, page 480 in the one i have in front of me. i refuse to do it, because it's just some cubicle geek who made the decision, and we've been hauling this stuff perfectly safely for decades the old way.

BUT . . . in the end, the only thing that matters is the little green book, and it's completely clear. if some hot pencil wants to enforce the rule, then we're shafted

They told us at load securment class the Roehl has decided they will no longer use snap binders. It will be all rachet binders from now on. You guys still have yours in your inventory?

I had heard that before I left there, I wonder if they are getting some shorter ratchets because I know I had a few loads that I had to use snaps because the rachets were too long

When my ratchets are too long I use duct tape and a bungee.
