You just call in and tell them. You would probably have two options, 1) cant haul it, or 2) they will find a close by flatbedder and have them bring you some chains.

Probably still a good idea to call in, let's say you're picking up in Norfolk, NE and you need something specific for you load (don't ask me what I forgot). In certain situations they'll tell you where to go to buy whatever you're looking for.

Made it to TA west Denver with 2 mins left on my 70. Curtainside trailer in the shop to have 7-pin connector replaced. Reset and layover before Monday deliveries (3 stops) of aluminum extrusions.

Speaking of getting needed equipment to secure a load:

My previous load had 6 skid steer loaders secured with 12 chains & 24 ratchet binders. The driver who picked up the load had to purchase the extra binders from a nearby Fastenal store.

A few months ago I was short straps since I had to drop a relay in Bensalem and that trailer had many straps not replaced in my inventory due to lack of equipment exchange at that location. So for my next load I had to buy 6 straps at a truck stop.

In both cases the company bought the items. This can be done with Comdata checks or purchase orders.

If you don't have enough chains, why not use straps?

fyi. if you don't have enough securement devices, then tell your FM and they will arrange to send someone your way. the last time I was at Abbeville I was asked to help out a driver who showed up without enough chains. I always carry a minimum of 18 chains, and my load was 7 pairs of cable reels. normally I put three in the front, but by using only 14 of mine I was able to give him 4. I was legal on number of tiesdowns, and he made up the slack with straps. the problem with straps on cable spools is that the spinner holes are full of grease, which stays with the strap forever. but we both left more or less adequate, tho still illegal.

I got the truck back. I did get a couple of pre plans sent to me this morning. I will be heading over to University Park to pick up a trailer and heading to Maquoketa, IA for a 2100 appt. Then off to Marengo, IA to pick up some scrap paper and taking it Titletown.

You'd think someone would say something.

Also, thinking back, I've picked up a few coils that were homicide style that had wooden "bunks" attached to them. I'm a redneck but even I wouldn't trust that type of redneck riggin'
