As long as he goes into it with a open mind and willing to learn he will do just fine.

plus if he wants to drive OTR or what not. When I thought of driving at first I was like "local is all I want, I dont want to do OTR." And if I didnt have my daughter and fiance griping about me being home then I'd stay OTR or regional. If he lives near Marshfield thats the best place to find local or a dedicated fleet as well as schooling. Also needs to see that "driving is not even the half of it." But I'm sure since you've read alot already you already know that as long as he knows that. My wife thinks all I do is drive. That I never leave the interstate as well as most of the public of what it takes. I sure didnt going into this, and the research and reading your doing is a major help to guide him as well if its something he wants to do. Wow and read the whole thread lol I dont think anyone has ever posted that. And also theres flatbed, van, or reefer for the most part thats the main choices in some companies, so seeing what he'd be interested in doing and what he wants from it like hometime, pay, equipment, and how he's treated by management. And alot of the gripes are the same across any company that we post for the most part. Like you said nature of the biz

The boy specifically mentioned OTR. He's a reliable kid, street smart, and willing to learn - but not so much when he was in High School, as then he was the typical "ruffian". Now his "lot in life" has left him thinking "wow, maybe I shoulda done better in school". He has a girl friend, a "plain Jane" type who supports his desire to drive and be away for extended periods of time. They stay with her family in Baraboo. They intended to visit me in Chicago, but combining the snow up north and my need to go to Enid OK for the holiday (my fiancé's father passed just before Thanksgiving - first Christmas without him, so we went to her mother's place), we all decided to meet up after the first of the year. Discussions on the CMV topic will ensue further at that time (but he DID call me all excited about it on Christmas). Other than the girlfriend and myself, he has pretty much "nobody". - A.

@coopnp - YES! After reading thru some of the threads, it occurred to me that I USED to think truck drivers were on the Interstate all day.... Bit of an eye-opener. Never really thought about all the tight lots, the layovers, etc.... Hats off to ALL of you.

    coopnp Thanks this.

high school doesnt really apply to this type of job. I hated high school and nearly passed myself since I didnt apply myself to my full potential. When I went to cdl school I applied myself as well as orientation and everyday on the road. Tell him about the site and as well as your research youve done as well to factor his options and what he'd like to drive for and all that. Not just our thread theres a wealth of information on here about everything that doesnt get taught or covered in cdl school or known to the public. Sorry about your fiances father and have a good new year

I39 exit 72 in IL. At a pilot. Whats more depressing then not being home being the only truck parked in the lot. Anyway ill sleep good with no noise so thats awsome.

@coopnp - yeah, high school was the same for him, the typical teen mentality of "I'll never need to know any of this stuff", then realizing later "wow, I better apply myself at whatever it is I choose to learn next!" (aka - CDL and driving stuff). I'll definitely show him this site and have him "mosey" thru a lot of threads. I had looked thru several before stumbling upon this one and immediately felt "reality of the road" seeping through, the REAL "daily grind" of it (which is likely the reason I was able to read the entire thread). Thanks for the condolences (it's been that kind of a year to boot) and we wish ALL of you a very safe, happy, and prosperous New Year as well. - A

The one nice thing with Roehl is i have never met another driver that wouldn't answer a question when i asked. I was a shipper picking up bricks and two other Roehl trucks showed up after me. We all helped each other secureing our loads and tarping. We even were going to the same place so at the consignee we helped each other. Most of the people i have met with the company are very helpfull.
