Since when do they tarp those loads?? We were told in securement putting lumber tarps on that high of a load by yourself is a safety risk. They said if it required lumbers the shipper put them up top or it didn't get done. Time to call someone in the office out on that unsafe directive.

I've never had to tarp them before. But it appears everyone here is tarping. It's highlighted on the bol. After getting some tips on safety and help from an old hand, I got the tarps up and I have the front half done. Working on the back now. I ended up throwing an extra strap at the very end of each section to hold onto while I'm trying to climb up and down.

When I was in securement training the guy showed us how to pull a lumber tarp on top of a load by ourselves. lol. He had us climbing up on the headache rack and jumping across onto the load. Felt pretty unsafe in the rain and ice. He was telling us "if you want to be flatbedders this is what we do." Umm...not this guy. He had told two of the other guys that I wouldn't last a month in flatbed. That was in November of 2011. I'm still getting the last laugh.

Yup, let me slip and break my leg doing that. Heck just reading it I know it sounds unsafe. I've tarped tall stacks of pipe though, things are slick! And in the ice tarps are really slick to!

I have been flatbedding since i came to Roehl 2 years ago and for an instructor to tell a student to jump from the headache rack imo needs to be fired. If i was to see a Roehl driver do that i would report it to safety faster than he could on fold the first flap.

Yeah they get really slick. My tarps are still half frozen so it was a bit slippery up there but I got it done. Actually looks pretty good in the dark too. Have to check in the morning to see if I need to add any bungees anywhere.

I totally agree. If I knew then what I know now I absolutely would have reported it. But at that time the guy we were turning to for knowledge led us to think it was an everyday thing. I haven't seen the guy around since about a month after that. Not sure if he's still instructing or not. But I'm not in and out of the terminals much these days.
