§ 392.51Reserve fuel; materials of trade.
Small amounts of fuel for the operation or maintenance of a commercial motor vehicle (including its auxiliary equipment) may be designated as materials of trade (see 49 CFR 171.8).
(a) The aggregate gross weight of all materials of trade on a motor vehicle may not exceed 200 kg (440 pounds).
(b) Packaging for gasoline must be made of metal or plastic and conform to requirements of 49 CFR Parts 171, 172, 173, and 178 or requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration contained in 29 CFR 1910.106.
(c) For Packing Group II (including gasoline), Packing Group III (including aviation fuel and fuel oil), or ORM-D, the material is limited to 30 kg (66 pounds) or 30 L (8 gallons).
(d) For diesel fuel, the capacity of the package is limited to 450 L (119 gallons).
(e) A Division 2.1 material in a cylinder is limited to a gross weight of 100 kg (220 pounds). (A Division 2.1 material is a flammable gas, including liquefied petroleum gas, butane, propane, liquefied natural gas, and methane).

It is to my understanding that dot requires the gens has to be equiped with a fuel pump.

There is no turning back now... I just finished ripping out the bunk unit and building a box for the circuitry. I still have to remove the condenser and hook the wiring back up.... hope the gen startsDominick253 Thanks this. -

220lbs is enough to run a generator for a week or more. I had some reservations about it when I thought the limit was closer to 40lbs, but now I feel like its the right choice. A 180lb tank I can fill at a filling station with extra weight left over for a spare bottle if I run out on the road should do me fine. I'll go a bit lighter to allow a good portion of the 8 gallons of gasoline allowed if I can find a dual fuel setup that fits my budget.
I'll have to get into a decent RV dealer some time to see what my tank mounting options are. If there is a safe way to do it, I'd like to hide it inside one of my smaller tanks that isn't currently even tee'd into my fuel system anyway.
It'll give me quite a healthy supply if I ever gather the gumption to play with propane injection on the old 9-0-nothing. -

Unlike the EU1000 and Eu2000, the EU3000 does not have a vacuum fuel pump, thus running an external tank is a lot more involved. There is a small company that makes a new valve cover, which in turn supplies vacuum to their fuel pump. This allows use of an external fuel tank. With no pump though, no easy way to run an external tank.
If I find a DEF tank and brackets though, I see a small 12v pump and a fuel line in my future, to fill the 3000's gas tank
I really thought it would be a hassle getting gas etc, but with the little amount that the 3000 uses, it is no big deal for me. The 2-2 gallon gas cans are light enough, even when full, to not be an issue. I estimate that will give me @35-40hrs of run time, so that is enough IMHO.
There are companies that make a tri fuel kit for the EU series (gas, propane, natural gas), but that would just give me more stuff to mount if I went propane, and not sure on the Honda warranty etc. Hell that 220lb of propane weighs as much as the generator and all the brackets, probably more!

leftlane, the extended run time tank sold for the eu3000 does not require it to be above the unit.
so its not gravity feed, you might recheck that as i know several people who use eu3000 at horse shows and kart races that have the extra tank, they have not added a pump. a new fuel cap is included with the extended run time tank with a hose attached which goes to the extra tankscottied67 Thanks this. -
