The best thing I like about trucking was the freedom it offered me. Also, I liked being able to do the cross country runs where it only takes you two days to go from coast to coast as a team.

Wow! Thats incredible! I would love to experience that. Thats one thing I would always tell the guys at truck school, is that I wanted to get out there and travel.........but they wanted local jobs.
-
I was OTR for six months and local for 1.5yrs. It takes a special person to do OTR.
KH -
special like what?

Going OTR means being away from your family for extended periods of time. That's why I switched to local. Also, if you have kids, it is even worse. You're gone and don't get to see them grow up. Trucking like fishing can make or break you. Ask any successful couple on here whats kept them together, and from what I have seen, it takes communication. Problems do arise at home such as car breaking down or appliance at the house. You cant do anything except guide your loved ones. There are female drivers on here and I'm hoping they will chime in on some of things I mentioned. I'm not saying OTR is difficult, but if your a person who's close to their family, it can be tough.
Shyne_E_Star Thanks this. -
OTR is very hard especially hauling refer. Shippers & Receivers in the refer world are the most disrespectful to the driver. They don't care about your appointment times.
I had to stop hauling refer before I went Postal on some a-hole.
Plus these companies like C.R. England say they pay for lumper when the truth is they pay a predetermined amount for lumpers. If the lumpers are not willing to take that amount or there are not lumpers available then your it, and that happens more often then you might think.
The major difference between refer and van is the length of haul is normally better pulling refer.
I did very like flatbed but I liked it.
Heavy Haul was great but hard to get into and find, you have to live in just the right area.
I loved hauling tanker and now own my own small little tank company, bulk liquid food grade. Lots of that work out Cali.Shyne_E_Star and The Challenger Thank this. -
True.....I see your point, and i do agree it would be difficult to a person who has a family at home.
