    14.2 is a normal charging rate if your gage is accurate.
    Spilled or overflow battery acid should not smell.
    It’s the hydrogen gas that you smell not liquid from bad sulfating batteries.
    Have the shop put a quality meter on the batteries and confirm the charging rate is correct.
