I understand the typical way to gain experience is thru one of the big companies that higher new drivers.
But, I can't do that because I have a full time job with 3 yrs to go before retiring and I want to get started sooner than that.
So, here are my questions:
1. If I get my CDL, what are my chances of getting an O/O to train me?
2. Could I get experience that way to qualify for the year or two of drive time companies require?
3. Does it change things if I'm willing to pay the O/O's increased insurance cost (how much would that be?) and drive for free?
Basically, I've got extra time and a little extra money now and I want to be prepared to move into a decent regional driving job in 3 yrs.
Thanks for any info. that might be helpful.

1 ) I have seen it done, but most of them you would not want to learn from.
2 ) Good chance the experience would not be recognized by other carriers / or insurance company. Hard to verify.
3 ) Might not be question of $$,usually insurance companies just will not allow it.
Look into state college sponsored night courses. Florida has good reputation for these classes. just not sure about your area.
good luck.gpsman Thanks this. -
Look for a CDL training program with weekend or night classes as jbatmick suggested.
After graduation you might find an 0/0 that has a couple of trucks leased onto an intermodal/drayage company that will work you on weekends. You will need a TWIC card for that type of work in most cases, to enter seaports. -
Mr. You are smart enough to find this place. Drive a truck around. You can get a demo ride from any truck dealer.

Thanks for the reply. My concern is that if I go to the trouble/expense of getting my cdl, I may not be able to get a job until I go OTR for a year or so anyway. Is that right, or is there a decent chance of getting some work post cdl training without experience.

Knowing your the Boss of 40 Tons has a serious affect on people. I would not have it any other way. My Zip code changes like the hands on a clock.

Son this is Trucking, I am sitting in my home. It has a red & a Yellow knob. If you don't like where you are, leave.

Well, it might not be a great job, but there are always driving jobs. Maybe not requiring a Class A license, but jobs are there.
Trucking ain't easy to figure out. You might not like it at your age, if you are retiring.Hank850 Thanks this. -
Ah, that probably scared him off. It's a young mans game. Them chains weigh tons. My Doctor told me not to do anything he would not do. I asked him if he would drive in snow. He said no. I never listen to my Doctor. I am not a negative person. This is not easy.

Get your cdl. Farmers always need help during harvest. Construction companies always need pt dump truck drivers. Just do it and figure it out.
Hank850 Thanks this.
