Its amazing isn't it? I see it all the time too and it's obvious that these drivers, at least the great majority, dont care. This is the part that has no business in a truck yet the mills keep throwing warm bodies at empty trucks.

You're right. But when lights go out, you may not realize it until you stop or Johnny Law gets to you first.

    So based upon the responses,

You guys do understand why they're doing it but do not personally agree with being fined. And yes, the company I was with had really bad scores because they had a guy in safety that was doing absolutely nothing but clocking in the hours and going home at 4. They brought a young guy in about a year and half ago and he's been hammering down on all violations and have even terminated the bad ones. The company I'm with just got a safety audit in Feburary and passed... so I guess things are going in the right direction. We've seen a rise in rates, more work, more customers and regained our PrePass privileges so I guess it is working. Unfair practice? I dont know.. but I am a man and I did agree to these terms and rules before being hired. Oh and to answer about bulb question, they do not hold company drivers accountable for any vehicle maintenance violations but they do hold Owner Operators accountable. Not that I think the company has much left anyway, they've terminated 3/4 of their owner operators. Lol.

violations happen. company don't pay fines for violations. there's no citation.

to charge the driver is a company lawsuit waiting to happen. if the company doesn't want a csa score. don't hire drivers.

it's part of business. if they want to blame someone. blame the gooberment. it's their stupid program anyways.

I can see firing habitual offenders. but anything else is a company that obviously can't handle the operation. let's see how much money they lose when it goes to court. I bet it's more then they collect.

anybody that works for a company like that needs their heads examined. 500 for an offense. that's almost a whole paycheck. after taxes.

$500 to O/O's. And yes they are habitual offenders. Guys just too lazy to update their logs. On a personal note,.. I was never fined for the 2 bad inspections I got. 2 violations for equipment. 9 others with zero problems found in the last 2 yrs.

And if $500 is almost a whole paycheck, they need to find a better paying company or one with more miles. I would take serious issue going out on the road for $500 week. I was making more than that 20 yrs ago. I need to find a guy willing to work for $500 a week. I'd put him to work now.

I mean what do you do with a guy who does everything else right, but continuously fails inspections? You have to draw a line somewhere. Problem here is that money is so good,. $500 is really nothing. Couple of the RGN guys claim they clear $8500 on a slow week.

we all see drivers every morning never even walk around the truck
before leaving out for the day
I was taught everytime i get in or out of the truck to walk down one side and on the way back
to walk up the other side I never see anyone do that
the fines might be too high but not getting a fine seems reasonable

    peterd Thanks this.

Its funny you say that. I got busted for falsifying my logs because my headlight was out. They were so bright, I never noticed the one went out.

I pulled into Tacoma, I had just slept for about 8 hours just south of Portland and couldnt sleep any more. Decided to make my way to my delivery 4 hours up the road. I hit the scale and she came out and asked me about my headlight. I said oh it must have just gone out. "Let me see your log book please" she said. Sure no problem. Thats when I learned about reciprocity. 10hrs OOS. I felt like a dork trying to explain to my boss what I had done.

if your like me. (just an example). who makes $1000 a week. and pays out $450 in taxes each week. that leaves you $550.
there's are lots of people who don't make that kind of money for any number reasons.

tell them to find another job is all words. we don't know their situation. which could be anything. the rookies certainly don't make a ton of money. or they wouldn't be complaining about the miles.

but i agree with the o/o's. they SHOULD be held accountable for their own trucks. but let's be realistic. there don't seem to be that many companies doing that sort of practice. or they'd be talked about more then just once in a blue moon on this forum.

I am a company driver at a mega carrier... we dont get fined for violations. . But some drivers have gotten bent out of shape cause they got a violation on a trailer.. with violations, the company pays the fine, but takes it out of your check... and some drivers thought the company also fined them...

Are you seriously paying $450 in taxes on $1000?

Or is that just a hypothetical number?

How do guys with kids and a stay at home wife or if she works part time even live on $550 a week?

Back in 2005 when my kids were living at home, I also support a disabled brother. My wife makes good money, so I wasnt the sole provider. But,.. it was nothing to go through $250 - $300 a week just in groceries. Add in Kids lunch money, there was $70 a week. We'd go through about $200 a week for gas in our vehicles. I havent even hit mortgage, electric, cell phones, cable, school cloths, work cloths, etc.

The hours we put in,.. these guys need to earn more than $500 a week. Thats not right.
