Driver would probably still be blamed for not taking better care of him/her self.....

Remember a few years ago there was a thread about J B Hunt or Werner or one of the Mega's had the ability to turn off the truck via the QualComm. Now, who you going to blame when they do that while you are dropping off Cabbage in Oregon????
Of course, it was never actually proved they could, but with modern electronics on the trucks now, it could be?????

and here-in lies the capabilities of hackers, and autonomous trucks....

Ran some debris over on the njtp one day. Thanks to some dipstick 4wheeler that doesn’t know how to secure a load in the bed of his pick up. Busted something under the truck, lost my service brakes. My trolley still worked, so i used the engine brake & the hand brake to get it off to the shoulder. Had to wait for a wrecker to give me a ride back to the barn.

I didn’t end up with a run away, but on a hill it could have been, & that is just circumstances. Not much you can do to avoid the debris on a busy road like that.

But if you're going downgrade properly, your brakes are cool enough that popping the knobs would stop the truck. If the brakes are too warm for that, that's on the driver.

I was driving in West Virginia, with those steep hills.
Starting down a hill, with a very heavy load, the check engine light comes on.
A few seconds later I get a red light and the engine shuts off, all on its own.
No more power steering or engine brakes - manual everything.
Auto trans, so I was in neutral.

A coolant line to the DEF tank had ruptured, I found out later.

Steady moderate pressure to the brakes, while fighting the steering, got me stopped on the side with some smoking brakes.
I made sure not to pump the brakes at all because I didn't want to lose my air pressure.

Almost, but not quite a runaway truck.

Pop them while going downhill on a curve could yield some very poor results.

And not popping them until 20mph later is far more likely to be deadly.
