Really, really good advice. Been so long I'd forgotten about taking care to have heavy box up front, otherwise it gets to swinging back there (heavy back box) like an anchor swung at the end of a line. Not much fun. Once saw a set of empty flats with heavy weight over back box tandems.
Trouble waiting to happen...

Something I learned years ago while driving down a 12% grade on a slippery road. Try to balance the load in the rear trailer. If you have all the weight in the front it makes the back axle light. No weight on a back axle while heavy on the front axle equals rear brake lock up.

Drove sets for 15 years. the reason you see them on their sides is the jockeys were going too fast for conditions. FedEx, Con Way

[QUOTE="semi" retired;4460343]" Sometimes they don't fully hook, and you get a few miles down the road and they let go"? I've heard enough.

You won't get that far. Ask me how I know haha.mpow66m and "semi" retired Thank this. -
that and don't push your luck in general. Finest road test driving behavior at all times. No agressive passing or other super trucker shenanigans. Keep the speed down and the wheel steady.Last edited: Feb 15, 2015

put it in low and really yank on that dolly once you shove it up under the rear box. Don't worry if you drag the rear box a half foot or so...terminal manager may not like it if he sees you doing that but he really won't like it if he sees the back box fall off the dolly. Oh and always double check that height on the back box so you don't high hook the dolly. Pick the front of the dolly tounge up level and make sure it has plenty of "pinch" against the bottom of the trailer.
as the for the dolly itself, pick the newest and nicest one you see. Those things get passed around and neglected. You want one with a nice tight 5th wheel. I prefer dual tires to super singles for noticeably better stability going down the road, but primary concern is the 5th wheel. Keep the speed down...NO SUPER TRUCKING NASCAR ACTION.Victor_V Thanks this. -
Just watch for the pokey brown truck going down I-25 with a lot of head room for snow. That'll be me.

Best of luck, dear, don't forget to look to the West at those beautiful mountains.
