Presently, I am actively seeking new employment opportunities, and have come across positions that require a driver capable of traversing to Canada. Although I possess a valid passport, I have yet to visit Canada. Therefore, I am keen to learn about any nuances associated with trucking and transporting loads to Canada that may not be immediately apparent to the average individual, and which I should be cognizant of prior to accepting such a role.

It’s pretty easy now. Your paperwork will all be taken care of ahead of time and when you hit the border they will scan the barcode on your paperwork and check your passport. They’ll ask a few questions like where are you going and how long do you plan to be in Canada.

There aren’t as many truckstops in Canada. The Pilot Flying J locations are similar to how they are down here. The ones I’ve been to have decent showers. PetroPass and the other Canadian fuel stops have showers that leave a lot to be desired. You will want to make sure and have your own towels.

And you better have a CLEAN criminal record. Otherwise, you won't be allowed into Canada.

You will need a passport card and a FAST card, also some money to pay border crossing fee to re enter these great United States. Unless it is a really good rate, don't bother. The brokers are usually giving Canada loads to Canada trucks as they can pay them in Canada dollars, 30% less than USD. You also need to be registered with Canada Customs and if you plan on bringing freight back to the US. If you are transporting vehicles, the VIN Number must be sent to US Customs 72 hours before exiting US so the vehicle can be researched to see if it is stolen etc.

I am not a saint, but my criminal record is clean enough that I was able to get a TWIC card.

They are still sticklers about felonies. A 20 year old conviction may not be an issue TSA when obtaining a TWIC but it could be an issue for Canadian border cops.

FAST card isn't necessary. Customs user fee was $13.50 last time I paid it which was well over a year ago. I cross so often that my company pays for a yearly transponder to cross back into the US.
