$2.85 for fuel at the Pilot Road Ranger$2.70 with a $0.15 discount...

Or $2.48 less than one block away at the Fuel Mart that accepts EFS and has enough trucks using it that it looks like the fuel is turned over quite a bit....

I was talking to another JCT driver who says he only gets fuel at Pilot Flying J's because if you fuel atMom and Pops you are going to get bad fuel and is that really worth the extra few cents that you can save per gallon?

He then proceeded to tell a story about a Flying J that put water in everybody's tanks and the Flying J paid to have it all repaired pumped out and replaced.....

I'm wondering is that the definition of irony?

No matter the company, all the fuel comes from the same places. Look ar the lines of tankers lined up at the refineries. It just a very small difference in the additives each company adds. So, get fuel from where you want.

As far a bad fuel....that can happen anywhere. If the place looks shady AF and not that many trucks, I'd steer clear. But that driver is correct that a national chain is more likely to cover repairs to trucks if it is proven the damages where caused by their fuel.

Well yeah if it's a middle of nowhere truck stop with only two trucks and selling fuel for a dollar cheaper than everywhere else I'm going to steer clear cuz I know I'm going to get screwed...

The point he was making was that Mom and Pops are going to screw you the Flying J won't and then tells a story about the Flying J putting bad fuel in a whole bunch of trucks.

I just find it interesting how fuel seems to be one of the few things that doesn't have the same type of purchase pressures on it like other Goods.

Example as you can go to Walmart and buy stuff extra cheap compared to going to a smaller chain or a mom-and-pop generally.

Diesel fuel seems to be the exact opposite. Mom and Pop's generally sell it for cheaper more than likely to get you into the store whereas Flying J has it marked up through the roof. Same goes for the other majors especially when you look at the nastc price sheet showing over a dollar a gallon mark up at the TA in Washington.

I know it probably has more to do with them being able to offer discounts if it's already highly marked up to ensure they capture customers that can only fuel there. But you think if they drop the price a little bit more they could cover the cost of that with the additional customers and probably push some people out of business.

Just things I think about when I'm bored

He has a jaded view of the independent truck stops. The good ones treat you way better than any national chain.

I think he told that story about Flying J to help justify his jaded view and try to instill doubt of independents into others.
