Plan A is to run it through Missouri. I-80 east across Wyoming. Take highway 2 in Lincoln, NE over to I-29, south to I-70 and hang a left.

I'll add just enough fuel in Cheyenne at $3.72/gal for the 585 mile run to St. Joseph, MO. There, I'll bring my total fuel up to 80 gallons at $3.58/gal to go 520 miles to Belleville, IN where I'll fill up at $3.54. Delivery set for Friday at 10 am. As this trip develops, I'll see whether I can stop in Troy, IL and let my friend buy me dinner. NO chicken wings for a while!

How much fluctuation in fuel prices do you allow for/plan on , before deviating from/changing "the plan....??? Thanks.

What is your source for these prices before you get to these locations? Thanks.

The Love's app on my phone. As for deviating for cheaper fuel I calculate the cost of the extra miles and compare it to the savings. $$$

Sharpp, while reading your wings and hate post I shot coffee out my nose. Thank you very much.

So I started in the OTR division yesterday and things are starting just ducky. The APU was 1/2gl low in antifreeze and wouldnt stay running, easy fix, and now the truck wont start. The truck I'm in has an avg mpg and instant mpg so I'm going to experiment with driving styles to improve mpg. I was able to make a .02mpg improvement through towns but quickly lost that on cruise going over the Pa turnpike with 44k in the box. Right now I'm setting a baseline for what typical company driver does.

To the company drivers out there who are following this thread and thinking of taking the big leap, you can do this yourself to get ready. Also start doing more thorough pretrips and getting the little things you would put off until the next service fixed. I'm eating a poop sandwich right now for not following that last bit and sitting in a Pilot waiting for road service. I shouldve had the batteries changed when the truck was hard starting in the yard.

I'm also feeling every extra foot of this truck over my old single screw daycab and 48' trailer.

Doing these things will start to get you thinking like an owner.

[Thanks. Am i correct to assume that if fuel costs go up, due to the FSC, profits "may" go up....??

The FSC is tied in, more or less, to the driver getting 6 mpg. If you're beating that mileage, (and I hope you are!) then your profits will rise with more expensive fuel.

Let's have a look at how this works:

When fuel prices are at $1.20/gal, there is no FSC. At 6 mpg, Driver A spends 20 cents per mile for fuel. Driver B gets 7 mpg so his costs are 17 cpm. Hunky dory.

Today, the average fuel price is around $3.83/gal (or pretty close, I didn't make a note of it). At JCT this week, our FSC is $.43/mile. So Driver A gets $.43 X 6 for every gallon or $2.58 per gallon in FSC. Subtract that from the average of $3.83 and you get $1.25, or about $.21 cpm. So his fuel costs have been equalized at about $1.25. Driver B gets $.43 X 7 per gallon, or $3.01. Subtract that and you get a fuel cost of $.82/gallon or about $.12 cpm. Because Driver B is beating the mileage that the FSC is based on, his costs go down with more expensive fuel.

This load ended up being 27,000 pounds, relatively light, and I got 7.2 mpg climbing out of Salt Lake City over to Rawlins. If the weather is right, tomorrow could be a VERY good day! I'm already considering blowing off the Cheyenne fuel stop and trying to make it to St. Joseph.

    Sharpp,

Might want to consider taking on 25-50 gallons in case you get stopped somewhere for the night. Are there fuel stops along the way you can fuel up if you do not make it??
