This is my first post on here, but I have been an observer for a long time. I have thoroughly enjoyed your writings. I have just been set up for my orientation day with JCT and am looking forward to a new challenge. I would love to sit down with one of y'all once I get up there to make my business the most productive and economical it can be. I see that I have a lot to learn but as we all know, you never stop learning in our profession.
I have decided to get one of the newer freightliners because of the fuel economy they are getting. I know I won't be able to get one of the 2014s but you can always hope. LOL
Thanks again for the reading materials at night and look forward to any advice y'all can offer. -
Sharpp, I know that we don't drive for the same company, but you have inspired me to look at my mpg's more closely. I drive a 2013 Freightliner Cascadia. No Apu
, but I do minimize my idling and running duals on the drives. I wish that my company had the apu's and super singles , but I have to work with what I got.
Ok. So, I went from Oklahoma City, Ok to Schyuler, NE empty for a total of 515 miles. I burned about 50 gallons of fuel and didn't idle that night (so I did not add fuel). That gave me around 10.2mpg empty. I was loaded with 43,315lbs in the box and drove down to Dodge City, Kn (about 366 miles) where I filled up. I averaged 7.1mpg. Then from Dodge City, Kn to El Paso, Tx (about 514 miles and still have the 43,315lbs in the box) I am estimating 7.2 - 7.4mpg as I have not filled up yet, but only burned around 75 gallons of fuel. As for my speed, I averaged 60mph, for that entire trip. I am going to continue to run 60mph and see how that works out for me. Then maybe starting looking to other add-ons to help boost the mpg like airtabs, and wheel covers.
I did download that app and love it. I know it it is not on par with your 8+ mpg's, but I will take the 7+ mpg all day. I was talking to one of the company drivers for the company I drive for and he told me that the company was crazy for expecting 7+ mpg from there trucks. I told him that it could be done, but he didn't want to hear it. His attitude was that it wasn't his money for the fuel so he don't care how good or bad his mpg's were. -

BTW, I picked up my truck today in Tulsa after a DPF cleaning, and I swear there is a difference in the shifting. Must be the new gear oil or something. -

Out of 31 in my class, I drew 8th and ended up with a 2012 Cascadia with 270k. Each letter after a truck number is a subsequent L/P driver (i.e. "D" is the 5th person in the truck, the first having no letter). Once you get your truck, go over EVERYTHING and note EVERYTHING that is wrong with it. They will fix it.
In my short time here, I'm averaging 3120 miles per week so far. Averaging 6.8mpg with every load over 41k. And a head wind on every load....how does that happen?!!
First accessory to buy is a ScanGaugeD.

Wheel covers are cool. They may be worth a tenth or two. Airtabs certainly work for keeping the spray off. The driver reviews I've seen talk about the increased visibility and stability, but most haven't seen much fuel economy increase. But that's the way it is when you're dealing in small, but useful, gains. There are certainly loads where I got 6 or 7 tenths better or worse than I expected.
Finally, a 515 mile dead head!?!? Dude, sign me up, lol. I'm glad that you're finding something useful here. Feel free to contribute any tips or tricks you have.
