Why is your acct. Flagged? Are they going to start charging you for the band width or server space that this thread is using up? I hope not!. Be safe as you pass through my stomping grounds.

Apparently private messages aren't so private, and the rules apply everywhere. That's all I can say on here, public OR private. I'll be zipping out to Gila Bend to avoid your Phoenix morning commute tomorrow!

Hi Sharpp, TrafficControlxl and everyone! I have been a long time reader of this thread and have really enjoyed the positive upbeat posts everyone gives, believe me I have read almost every thread on TTR. I am getting ready to go to school for my cdl and would like some advice on what companies to start with to get the experience to later transition over to JCT. As for me, I am 56 yrs. young, have owned and operated a couple of small businesses the past 20+ yrs. (Sportsbar and restaurant, Irrigation Co.), am in excellent shape, can run circles around people half my age. Also, I have been a single father raising my kids the past 12 yrs. (daughter is now married in Houston to a Marine and my son has just graduated from college and has joined the Army) so it is time for me to do some traveling without the stress of dealing with employees. Although I have the financial means to purchase my own truck, I really like the lease/purchase option with JCT. Over the years I have learned some things: 1) Why use your money when you can leverage other people's money without the financial liability (i.e. credit dings), and 2) If you want to be successful always have a plan and stick to it while watching the details. Any advice on start up companies to get the experience (reefer, dry van - does it matter with JCT?, regional or OTR?, etc...) that would help with joining JCT? Any and all advice is highly appreciated. Thanks!

Whichever starter company you end up choosing make sure your trainer actually trains you. Some "trainers" treat students like a co-driver and extra income source for themselves. Learn all you can about operating efficiently. If the company offers a fuel mileage bonus, this will help you start thinking of fuel as an investment not an expense.

I guess your question is a little outside the scope of this thread, but since you're a loyal reader I suppose we can let that slide! I was fortunate enough to be trained by Watkins Shepard at their Missoula, MT location. We got mountain driving training from day one up there. I recommend that you do your research and start with a good OTR company that you can stand to stay with for a year or more. At least get a winter's driving under your belt. Your previous business experience will help you, but there's nothing like a Wyoming whiteout to help you decide if this is the right career for you!

Sharpp, I hear ya on Watkins and Shepard and a Wyoming White Out! That is good advice. Thanks.

This winter, you don't even need to go that far. Just drive in Indiana or Illinois. White out, wind, ice of all colors, ditch divers by the hundreds, and some pretty messed up semis on their sides, too, will put the hair on you. Or make your tear it out and consider a career change.
