I think you may have taken me the wrong way. I certainly wasn't trying to belittle or talk down to anyone. If I didn't know better from schooling by those with more knowledge than I then I too would worry about the effects of chemical on high carbon steel if the label said there was going to be residue left by the carbon.

There's almost nothing over the counter that has the ability to affect the strength of high carbon steel and certainly nothing that is advertised as a cleaner.

Please accept my apologies if I did offend you, was never my intent. I'll offend Carl and Martin if given the chance but that's not what I was shooting for in my post to you.

No sir, I copied you loud and clear. If I'd have felt slighted I'd have said so. As I said sometimes I'm a little paranoid-not having the knowledge you do on the subject I was feeling that feeling when you do something and it's either a.) perfectly fine and normal, or b.) you don't even realize how terribly wrong things are about to go.

    I appreciate the insight.

So now I'm on the record as saying I'd vouch for Evapo Rust. Cleaned up my chains and binders quite nicely and saved me from spending a day with a wire brush and a job done not near as well. Poured the liquid on the blacktop out front of my unit: dry ground when I went back with no staining whatsoever.
