I think about this sometimes I go into the petro awhile back the one in Knoxville off watt rd. so the young guy trucker obviously asks the cb tech lol how much for a peak and tune and to put in a talkback. tech says $35 the young man says ok and gives the tech the radio. I'm pretty sure it was a cobra 29 new. the kid says I'll be back in 20mins or so. tech lol says no problem. watched the tech open the unit quick snip and clip. probably spread the coils at least that's what I hear most do to those radios and most likely worked his magic using the pa to do the talk back. took him a whole 10 mins to do this. the kid comes back all happy he's getting his radio fixed. tech says your radio is done. kid says that was fast. tech says that'll be $35. tech should have said that'll be $35 and thank you for letting me jack up and whack out your radio 4/u

My last Galaxy was ordered from amazon unpacked and bolted into the truck. Wilson 5000's that Ive had for years replaced the fiberglass sticks and I have an SWR of about 1.4 running thru the factory radio meter and factory Pete multiplexed coax. Gets out a couple miles which is all I need for talking to scale shacks for loading and listening for traffic updates. But then every once in a while I listen to guys from the south that are skipping all the way up here to Washington state. Got a peaxed n tuned galaxy in my pickup but its not much better then the one in the Pete.

Atmospheric conditions have a lot to do with skip, more than wattage of the radio. As an example on a different band I was able to talk to a friend while he was stationed in Antarctica. I was at home in Maryland 100 watts on SSB into a wire antenna about 20 ft in the air. It was correct band for the conditions. To the original post Many cb shops likely know they are degrading the actual performance of the radios but they are giving the drivers what the DRIVER thinks he needs for performance. As an example and I do not know all the factors involved last night 2 dump trailers passed me and we chatted briefly 1 was very loud in fact I had to listen close to understand him the other was quieter and clearer. After they got down the road aways perhaps 3miles ahead of me I could only hear the loud radio piece meal while the fellow with the radio that was quieter when close was still easily understood and clear. I have no idea of the types of radios they were running or their antenna systems. The loud radio did clear up better after he was 3/4 mile ahead until he started fading.

Well at one time i to was an swr guy and fell for the peak n tune..Dont know alot more now but what i do know is swr means squat and im not a fella to fall for the golden screw driver bs...
I saw the CB MAN in carlisle do the same thing..He took a buddys radio and i watched him turn the pots, clip something and asked for a radio chk and took my buddys $$..Warned him to not to do it but didnt listen..Doesnt get out further or any amount louder..His buddy the so called antenna man is not much better....He tried tuning same buddys antennas..Again i warned him but didnt listen...This so called ant man took a cheap barjan swr meter and did tune his ant better but did it in a parkin lot full of truck, power lines and buildings..YEAH,just who i want tuning my ant..Didnt get his antenna much better and said he cant do no more but was real quick gettin his hand out for the $$

oh yeah both the radio man and antenna man are both nice guys.but are only out there to take drivers $$$$$ neither has any real skill. the radio man actually does a tune up or tweakeeeeee peekeeeee off of a you tube video... the antenna man faaa get about it. total idiot and basically is stealing drivers $$$$$ people go to jail for stealing that's exactly what he's doing.the so called radio man loves to sell the general hp/40 has no idea how to set it up... my buddy bought one from him dumb ### he is and if he talks on it 20minutes it'll overheat literally burn your hand if you go anywhere near the amp on the bottom of the unit that's pathetic...............

ok Craig here is the deal you've got going your definitely getting a false reading off your equipment aka your mfj the 955 Stryker you have will shut itself off by itself if two things ever happen one if the swrs get too high and number two if the unit overheats it will shut itself off. I know this. get the grounding done we have talked about. and rabbi might not like this but take the stud mark sold you and throw it in a dumpster. buy a predator stud. problem solved case closed. I know what I'm talking about I've been there done that. we all live and learn. hopefully --------- at least I do

ok here is the real deal on the idiots in Carlisle radio man sells radio's to drivers that are jacked up .might be a brand new radio yours you buy or a new one he sells you. he jacks it up for you and I'm using nice wording.here. then the so called antenna man wants to or gets driver's to buy two Browning knock off predators. they have plenty of them. he sets both antennas yeah right and we all know two antennas unless a real antenna man or tech sets them have very high swrs. so your getting a jacked up radio from radio man. and two antennas giving a 1:7 or 1:8 swr reading that shows that on a mfj or any other Swr meter you use.... such nice guys they are. and here the driver thinks he has it going on .
