Hi everybody. If any of you people out here do reefer anywhere in Canada. Please give out your thoughts. I’m an owner operator working on my own plates and own insurance. But the company I am working with has a dedicated contract with Safeway. So we deliver to all Safeway / Sobeys store s. Everytime we go to the store , now we’re expected to unload the full trailer with their hand jacks and pick up dunnage by ourselves, Is this okay insurance wise ? Since I’m on my own plates. Safeway is one of those companies where 1 store will happily unload u and the other will say the driver needs to get in the trailer. I’m 3rd party based out of Calgary.

I'd say "my job title is DRIVER - not receiver. I won't be responsible for unloading and placing your product. I don't get paid for that".
Another Canadian driver, ilovetruckz and Peplow Thank this. -
This has been going on forever. They expect you to stock their shelves if your appointment was on time.
Go to the main warehouses and they want you (Driver) to sort any mixed skid and any product that goes on small wood. (Grocery People, Gordon Food Service) If the product is on softwood pallets, they want you to put it on hardwood pallets.
I used to call it pallet breeding.
Funny story, I was delivering a 6 pallet order of Hartz Mountain pet supplies to Mac-Con. An American driver pulled in and was very upset when he found out that he had to swamp the trailer and made no attempt to hide his anger. They told him to call his dispatch, if they could make other arrangements so be it. They could not.
So now he has no choice but to swamp his own trailer. He had made no friends by this time so the power-jack operators were purposely being slow at getting around to his freight. He gets to a point where he has no room to unload the rest and starts barking at one of the operators to get their #### out of his way.
the power-jack operator walks over to one of his pallets and kicked over the freight stating that it was the wrong block and tier. And the fight was on!
Upside is, he didn't have to swamp the rest himself as he was not allowed back in the building.

Been like this for years. This is the reason the Safeway rate was as high as it was.
Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
Lazy unionized workers.

My wife works at a Sobeys in Ontario. They have a receiver at her store that unloads the grocery loads. The only ones that unload their own trucks is the pop and chip guys and the bread guy.

My brother went there, everything was good. Guy picked up a pen to sign the BOL. The buzzer went for coffee break, guy drops the pen and walked away.
My brother was pretty upset about that. But he was able to get a supervisor to sign it off.Another Canadian driver, BigHossVolvo and Snoopycda Thank this. -
I'M confused,
The OP say's they are an O/O but doesn't get paid to unload,
What does the contract say?
That's the real ????. and answer.Another Canadian driver and Peplow Thank this. -
WCB ,What is the % of O/O's that have WCB? IMO very low, that costs money, and the general liability insurance is to protect the company, Not the O/O.Another Canadian driver and '88K100 Thank this.
