Yeah wide open trucks with some power make it fun, easier to get miles without feeling beat up. That's why back in the days they would be able to drive two days of miles easily. With a wide open truck I could go past 750 miles pretty easily if I wanted to and didn't feel beat down. Yeah in Cali it's gonna be all new trucks with then emissions crap on em.

Sounds like you got a good woman taking care of you better hang on to that one. Haha, you still young is probably why otr doesn't appeal to you. I was 28 when I decided to go Otr. But then again driving truck is in the family. So it always appealed to me. See you YRC guys got different routes and can go hop terminal to terminal. If we did that I probably wouldn't miss it. See me and cool35 have a very limited lanes, I've got maybe 3 lanes and one I barley do and the other one I don't do unless someone is off. So basically one lane is where the extra stuff goes. I'd go to YRC but in my area they got no work and went from 50 road to 13 and still dropping. But then again I'd probably whine about the truck lol.

LOl yea I do, even though she nags me a lot or I get her mad, this one is worth the craziness LOL. only thing shes just 20 and not turning 21 till january so going out is limited but whatever... but its whatever, she likes getting on the bike, hoping on 4 wheelers and even likes working on the firebird with me, for my dad to say a keeper thats actually a first LOL now just time for her to meet mother and my grandma...
I started trucking at 22, and Im 24 now. Ok doing limited runs would drive me insane so I could understand that, yea on my bid I only go to so many terminals but I do get choice of what to do as I got pull over the extras which is nice. I had the choice of either Philly or Lansdale, only a 6 miles difference but Ive been to Lansdale quite a bit recently so I choose Philly. Last night I got called for either a 63 mile or 74 mile terminal, choose the 74 as a good friend of mine got called back to work there after a 4 year layoff from the merge. Go in and they say change of plans the 126 mile or 84 mile. AT 10pm I choose the 126 as theres no traffic, if it were 5am I would choose the closer one due to traffic so I can save hours. Its even nice if Im waiting for my second half and I got the choice to keep waiting or take it, normally I take it as I hate sitting LOL. ITs even BETTER when they say or go home for the day, so I can work 4-5 hours and they end up paying a 8 hour day.
My grandfather was a trucker back in the day, has 2 million accident free miles, had a NY to Miami. He LOVED IT. But he really had nothing keeping him around and he didnt care about being home as much. He was hoping I would do OTR like him but I got no desire, but once he found out where Im at hes even happier. I will tell him I got the doubles, this that and he always yells at me to STOP as he gets the itch and just wants to hop back in.Last edited: May 23, 2013

Yeah variety makes a big difference from getting bored. Plus you didn't have to go Otr to get your exp which I would loved to do it that way. But then again when I got my cdl I was all for the road cause I just wanted something that payed better then 35k a year at 28. I got to a dead end at my regular job and wanted anyway out. Plus I lived in a small town then so there was nothing there. Yeah your grandfather probably trucked during the best time to be a trucker I can see why he loved it. Less rules and regs, easier to make money, and ppl wanted to be out there instead of ppl being grumpy cause they have to be out there on the road. I did get burnt out that's why I got this gig.

Yea radman I hear you, Originally when I left CWF and returned to FXG I was going to buy my own route, then decided to buy a truck for line-haul instead with my dad, he would run all the paperwork and business stuff and I would run all operations and operate the truck, and eventually purchase more. All the runs by us are local so it would be good. Then I got into YRC and said forget all that. I didnt wanna go OTR as I was too stubborn to even go and had too much to leave behind. I come from a small town too, with the highest taxes in the country... Only trucking companies were in NYC, a few small ma and pa, the parcel services, CWF and YRC. Now that I moved up north to my new terminal there are so many to choose from worse case scenario
-
FXG probably would of been a headache. I think going to YRC was the better choice. If I found this gig when I was your age I'd go nowhere and pretty much be set. So in your case you are very lucky and probably won't need to go anywhere. My buddy found UPS parcel at 22 and he's still there at 35. He said it was the best move he made. Getting into these companies where there is alot of top side is a good move cause when your in your 30's your still young really but with good income and alot of choices. My buddy stayed van package driver, doesn't want more then 40hrs and no weekend work makes 70k. Crys if he gets OT at 47.00 hour lol. He could easily jump to CDL feeder driver, bump to a day run sweet route and make 150k or more. He doesn't want more hours though. Lol.

I would love to have that UPS feeder job! Its just so impossible to get, and cry making overtine??? I know theres days you dont want it but when I was peddling I usually averaged 2 hours a day... Although there were guys who would say they have to have 3+ every day
-
Me too. I could never complain about that!

What a horrible day it was going up the I-5 yesterday. I did a turn. Pretty rare. Traffic was crazy!

Had I started doing local or shuttle runs in the beginning, I'd probably not care about OTR. When I went into trucking is was all about hitting the open road though. It was what I wanted to do. I have no regrets. It was a good job and I needed to do it at the time. Needed money and sure didn't need the wife! It was the perfect job for me at the time. Had a lot of fun out there, especially on down time.
