So you guys are gonna roast me for this but… I went to get a new mask from the rental place and when I got back my buddy who’s helping me (has prior experience with the machine but not on trucks) had already started without covering much up. Got the wires and airlines covered that’s pretty much it. I’m gonna use a pressured air piston to remove what I can after the job is done, then I’ll hit it with hot water pressure.

I had to rent a huge airmen compressor because the machine will shut off quick with anything smaller. Also I’m using black aluminum oxide. $10 a bag. Here’s a pic if it helps

Tin foil works great for covering hoses and wiring to keep the sand out

UPDATE: so I finished the sandblasting yesterday and it came out great. It is a VERY messy process however. I went through about 15 bags of media. I reused what I could, but since I did it outside some of it was not recyclable. Despite not covering up seals or joints I didn’t cause them any damage because I didn’t spray them directly. A lot of the old grease helped protect them. Before painting I thoroughly blew of the chassis. I used a epoxy primer along with a 2 part polyurethane.

Best to change your air cleaners on the truck and wipe out the inside of housing good, l worked at a shop a long time ago that had the outside of shop steel walls blasted and all the motors that were a part came back in the next mo. to be done over because of the fine dust that got every where?

Always cover the cab with a tarp, cover stacks, stuff rags in holes tape up air cleaners. Cover engine with painters plastic. Just a light breeze will carry that stuff everywhere and fine sand and paint dust will be in and on everything. Not thrilling to get it all over the cab and hood paint. Trust me you will find it in the cab. Lol!

I have a high pressure water blasting system, since I got that I don’t have issues with sand or dust.

I have been looking at soda blasting equipment but don’t know yet.
