I'd put that Volvo to work. Pre EGR, checked out. After your first couple settlements your rolling. Take it as it comes.

You'll need more than $5k. That wont even cover 2 weeks of fuel. What happens if a tire blows or truck needs to go in the shop. Seems every time my truck went into a shop while out on the road it was always a min $1000 - $1500. I take that back. I had an air line kink under the sleeper that I couldnt find and it was fixed for $480.

    Trucking is not cheap.

I started with $30k cash. I bought a $20k truck, realized $10k would not be enough to carry me through and borrowed another $20k from my mother inlaw so I would have a safety cushion.

It took me 3 yrs to save $30k. I struggled the whole time. Many times when I got over $20k I wanted to spend that money. Its difficult to stay the course. Now here I am. All money repaid and I am debt free and owe no one. I have money in the bank and looking to hire my first driver and buy a second truck.

Dont put yourself in a bind that you can not recover from. If you borrow,.. make sure you have the means to repay that debt or your no better off then before you borrowed the money.

Be smart,.. dont rush into it. Its too easy to get in over your head.

if he is going to lease on with mercer then he should be able to use their fuel card and not have to pay out of pocket for it, that should help providing he can use their card.

My old boss thought the same thing, and it was checked by a mechanic. Best case it needs a new head. 5k will cover the cost of a rebuilt trans or rear end but not the labor.

Yeah I started out with a $15,000 stash and almost went under. Truck sat for 6 months in my driveway before i worked it also. But it didn't have payments. Sounds like somebody is in a hurry to go owner operating. Good luck with that.

A lot of good advice can come from fresh experience. Bet you had to walk fifteen miles in the snow, uphill, when you started out....

I didn't have to walk uphill....but with $5k and it being plenty to start off with...I wish he bought a w9 instead so I could get a good deal on it in 6 months
