SCAC numbers ... Does anyone have those and are they worth the $80/year to have it? How many brokers/shippers require them?

You will need one if you will be dealing with customs (ports, canada, etc)

I can't think of why you'd need one otherwise. That's the only time we use ours.

I've seen a lot of different shippers that required them over the years but hardly ever with spot freight. In a case where they did need one with spot, that I recall recently, it was a Landstar load and Landstar SCAC code worked great.

Yeah, it's for in-house accounting with the big corps. Keeps them from having issues when one location enters a trucking company under a slightly differing name or format, i.e. Prime and Prime, Inc. And yes, it's mostly for contract freight.

That's on the broker done a lot of spot loads to Wal Mart we don't have a SCAC. It always pops up as the broker's SCAC on BOL.
